Dani Pedrosa flies anti-guardrail flag in Catalunya

Dani_pedrosa_guard_rail.jpgThere’s a pan-European campaign taking place right now to have dangerous road furniture — primarily guard rails, but also signposts, streetlights, etc. — replaced with safer alternatives. They have a valid point. There’s no justification for governments continuing to install criminally unsafe infrastructure when safe alternatives exist for similar money. Single rail guardrails, for instance, merely need an additional lower rail added to avoid decapitating bikers, while cable guardrails are just stupid. The campaign has been slowly gathering momentum over the last few years but may have now reached a tipping point thanks to the support of MotoGP contenders like Dani Pedrosa and the media attention they bring.

There’s no justification for governments continuing to install criminally unsafe infrastructure when safe alternatives exist for similar money. Single rail guardrails, for instance, merely need an additional lower rail added to avoid decapitating bikers, while cable guardrails are just stupid.

¿Firstly, which is it? ¿Similar money, or twice (or more) the money?
The “cable” guardrails are between 5 and 100 times the cost (depending on supplier, amount purchased, etc), and double (or the inevitable triple and more after truckers inevitably complain that THEIR safety isn’t being considered) are also more expensive, especially considering retrofitting costs that will, for the vast majority of guardrails, require the removal of the original guardrails (increasing the danger to ALL motorists during the retrofit period).
Secondly, the allegation that it’s “criminally unsafe” is hyperbole taken beyond extreme- To outright lie. Driving in general (much like breathing) is a bit of a gamble, and motorcycles are far more likely to be involved in accidents in general (due to the design). The answer is NOT, inherently, millions (billions- even more in the end) spent on road safety “features” that reduce driver/motorcyclist/other attentiveness by creating an utterly false sense of safety (inevitably INCREASING the number of accidents, as wider lanes, bohdi dots, and etc have shown), and to increase road user AWARENESS of the dangers.
Perhaps the retrofits are justifiable, in the end- But do it smartly, based on the REAL, not PERCEIVED, need- Or risk infinitely more DEATHS for the consequences.
