Europe legislates motorcycle-friendly guard rails

GuardRail_Assassini.jpgSoon after Dani Pedrosa flew the anti-guardrail flag at Catalunya, the European Committee for Standardization voted to “develop a European Standard which reduces the impact severity of motorcyclist collisions with safety barriers.” While this is hardly the sweeping decision with immediate results campaigners had hoped for, it will eventually lead to safer infrastructure. While the EU has yet to arrive at an acceptable standard for guardrails, it’s thought that single rails will be improved with the addition of a second, lower rail and wire barriers will be scraped altogether. Eventually, we could even see the addition of foam or other energy absorbent materials or systems.

While the over-reaction that one should, rightfully, have feared fortunately didn’t happen, we still see LOWERED actual safety due to the false perception of greater “safety features”, leading to user (rider s and otherwise) to disregard their own respoisbility for their safety, leading, inevitiably, to greater accidents and greater percentage of fatalities.
