2008 Honda Goldwing Vs. Adirondacks

goldiepost.jpgOver the years, Honda’s Goldwing has been looked upon with veneration by older bikers. Satellite navigation, CD changer, iPod dock, heated seats and grips, intercom system and the ability to go in reverse are mocked by the youth as antithetical to motorcycling. We take the latest iteration of Golden Oldie to the rolling two-lane highways of Adirondack Park, the largest federally controlled wilderness east of the Mississippi.

Man I love these features you guys write and eagerly waited nearly two months since the last one. Too bad this newest piece involved, of all things, a f’ing Goldwing and 10 hours of riding the freeway. Whats next a piece about a family vacation in the Volvo station wagon?

The Adirondacks are managed by New York State not the Federal government.

Wow. I take it this was your first trip out of the city in a long while. The rangers are there because to many folks like yourselves will destroy the park for those who choose to respect it. Bear canisters cannot be opened by animals, and will protect the food inside (not to mention you). Oh, and there is a permanent ban on campfires outside of designated sites across the park. Lighting fires in the woods, halfway up a mountain is very disrespecful to all who enjoy this natural region. Please keep your bike in the city and leave the Dacks to the ‘Canucks.’

Clive, if you scroll over the “Image” button on the graph, you’ll notice the -5. All the way across.

Will: Grant’s part native American and I was raised by wolves, believe me, the woods are safe when we’re in them.

There is some fantastic riding in the Adirondacks (I live in upstate), and I’m hoping for at least on more ride up there before it gets too cold. It can snow in early September in High Peaks region.

Camping can be great too, but Mt. Marcy is an Adirondack tourist trap, which has contributed to the fire ban and bear problems. Try riding on 30 or 3 through Tupper Lake to Lake Placid and the Keene Valley. Beautiful, not quite as twisty as some areas in Catskills, but much bigger and quieter. And always plenty of places to camp to stay for the night.

Will, I’m glad you’re so passionate about the Adirondacks. But the rangers aren’t there because of too many people like Wes and I, who before the age of 13 were taught proper safety, use of landmarks, the importance of keeping to trails whether human or animal, knowledge of and protection against poisonous flora and fauna as well as constant vigilance against large predators.

That said, I completely understand why the rangers are so grouchy. I spotted empty bottles, wrappers, cigarette butts, abandoned utensils, camping and cooking gear on both of my trips throughout the Adirondacks this past summer. I’m sure they feel like babysitters instead of rangers most the time.
