What the heck is this Yamaha?

Yamaha_Concept.jpgVarious sources claim that this mysterious new Yamaha is a successor to the Gen-RYU concept, is a gasoline/electric hybrid, uses an automatic transmission and will debut in production-ready form this fall. That the transmission is an automatic or a CVT seems evidenced by the large housing and the lack of a gear pedal, while the hybrid powertrain would seem to be verified by the dumpy styling. Far less reliable sources even claim that this bike is called the Yamaha Prius, which they seem to have conjured by combining a lack of mental prowess and overly enthusiastic use of Google Translate. What is it? Like everyone else, we haven’t a clue. Care to guess?

looks like someone is trying to live the dream of their very own Kaneda Bike (from the anime Akira)

Don’t you wish designers would stop beating around the Akira bush and just give us the Akira bike?

Personally, the looks do little for me, though I do appreciate the technological step forward (sideways?). Here’s hoping it’s less obese than the DN-01.

Why are these guys adding technology (if this thing turns out to be a hybrid) to accomplish something. Why not go the way of BMW cars, where their small diesels are almost comparable in emissions to Prius and Insight. Improving the all the small things, make it lighter, more efficent, but keep the joy of driving.

Reminds me a bit of the Suzuki Strider concept of a couple of years ago.
