Mike Charlton's 500mph destiny draws nigh

Dailies -

500mph_legs.jpgMike Charlton’s 500mph jet bike is almost ready for its land speed record attempt at the Bonneville Salt Flats on 20 September.  Mike estimates that this 10,000bhp jet engine should be capable of shattering the existing outright motorcycle speed record by as much as 140mph. The Cleveland Plain Dealer documented Mike’s progress in an excellent video, you’ll find it below. >

Thats not a motorcycle. Two wheels in the back, one up front. Looks more like a stretched and skinny drag racer/funny car.

Those are just stabilizers for basic transport.

    • not the same Matt as above

The 2 external wheels on the back aren’t present on the bike when it makes its inaugural trip down the drag strip.

The rear wheels are just to move it around, stupid.

Always amazes me when people are smart enough to build stuff like this, but still not smart enough to wear hearing protection…

Those are coasters… You can see the real wheel inside with a wellow spring…

I am no engineer, but wouldn’t the torque of the turbofan rotation cause this thing to just fall on it’s side?

  • An Engineer

The way a Turbojet engine works is through counter-rotating parts. We are not talking about a TurboShaft engine used in Indy-racers(back in the day) and helicopters.

There is no torque effect due to their being no shaft and we are taking about thrust power. You can calculate horsepower from stand measurments, but the real measurement is from thrust of air exiting the engine. Aka how many pounds of thrust does this engine develop. Therefore the bike will be pushed down the track.

I hope they did their aerodynamic and downforce calculations correctly or this could go really bad.

The aerodynamics look pretty rudimentary to me :s

The guy sounds-and kinda’ looks-like Bill Murray in ‘Caddyshack’. Still, they’re on their way to “Bonnee-ville”-good luck, and be safe.

Mike is no noob when it comes to high horsepower drag racing… He built and runs American Thunder, a 10,000 horsepower jet drag truck, and Quasimoto, a supercharged, nitrous oxide v8 drag bike. Both are events in themselves at any drag strip they show up at.
