The Zaeta 530 is Graziano Rossi’s take on the perfect bike for bar hopping and flat track racing. This is the production version of the Ouroboros Zaeta prototype we saw last summer, “Ouroboros” seems to have been dropped from its name. The Zaeta’s looks will be left up to the customer, who can spec any color for the paint, chassis and other components, as well as the style of the seat unit, but the mechanical components are set in stone. An Italian-made 530cc single-cylinder engine fills up the steel cradle frame and is held up by relatively weedy suspension components. They’re all that’s necessary as the whole thing weighs just 115kg/253lbs (wet). Graziano and his business partner’s are serious about the Zaeta’s oval track credentials, included in the €13,500 price tag are two private racing lessons with a champion tracker.

    That’s almost US$18,000 for what looks to me like a stripped-down mid-Seventies Husky. I don’t get it. Something just doesn’t connect here.

    I like it. Comparisons to Harley are ridiculous, the only thing they’ve made that weighs 115kg is a saddle.

    I’ll bet that thing is an absolute blast. Power should be at least 50, and is probably closer to 55. I’m guessing this thing turns too as Graziano Rossi’s no stranger to going fast on two wheels.

    I think it’s great and would love to have something like it, but not for anywhere near that price. I’d like to build one out of an XR400 or DR-Z or something. Ideally a 450F mx bike if i thought i could get it street licensed.

      KTM 450 EXC? It’s not the motocross motor, but in my opinion it’s got a much better motor for the street. It’s not scary, it lasts far longer than an MX’r and it’s available at dealerships nation-wide.

      Something most people don’t take into consideration with these types of bikes is the fact that they’re a lot like James Dean: They live fast, and die young. For a good example of what’s required to make a single cylinder engine live on the street take a look at the KLR 650. It makes a whopping 34hp out of it’s 650cc’s and will live to see 80k miles. A 450 motocrosser pumps out 50hp and to stay happy needs its rings changed at least every 20 hours. Fast guys do em’ at ten or earlier.

      I build fire breathing KTM motors for a living and when it came time to buy a new bike I thought long and hard about building myself a 70hp 525-turned-cafe-racer. Even with every trick in the book, 660cc’s, a crank balanced to within a nat’s ass and low compression I was still looking at doing a bottom end every 15k, valves sooner than that, and a whole bunch of rings, a few pistons and at least 2 sleeves for the cylinder.

      So while the idea of a fast, light, single-cylinder street bike seems totally awesome, it’s a short honeymoon before a maintenance intensive reality sets in. In a nutshell, that’s why these bikes are Very uncommon.

    Hey Sean, thanks for confirming what a lot of us dirtbike riders are finding out the hard way; these modern high performance 4 stroke motocross motors are way too high maintenance. A buddy of mine had to replace the titanium valves in his 250F at only 15 hours! The cost is astronomical compared to maintaining 2 strokes. I think riders are going to be switching back to the blue smokers in droves.

    That said this type of street thumper is my cup of tea. Perfect for twisty canyon roads, tons of fun at sensible speeds. How about that KTM Duke 690? What’s the longevity of that mill?

      The 690 was designed from the get go as a street motor, and as such it lives accordingly. I don’t have too much experience with them (small market for hot-rod 690s…), but from what I’ve seen and heard they’ll live to at least 40k with regular valve adjustments.

    I too would love to see something like this powered with an engine from a Honda XR650R, Husky 610, KTM 625/660/690, etc. I have 20,000 miles on my KTM 625 SMC, making over 50 RWHP, flogged HARD every weekend, and it’s still running strong.
