2011 Ducati 1198 and 1198 SP: loaded

2011 is likely the last full model year for the 1198 so, to keep its products from gathering dust on store shelfs, Ducati’s heaped its superbikes full of extras. We’re not just talking some new paint colors either. Take the Ducati 1198 SP for instance, it replaces the “S” model, but brings with it 7-spoke forged Marchesini wheels, an aluminum fuel tank, a quick shifter, slipper clutch and even a $1,400 Ohlins TTX shock, all for just a $100 premium over the old “S.” Meanwhile, the 2011 Ducati 1198 gains standard traction control and even a quick shifter.

We exclusively brought you news of the $21,995 SP’s improved spec yesterday, but today’s official release adds news of the Marchesini wheels. Not only does the fuel tank weigh 2.2lbs less than the steel item on the old bike, but it also holds a little over a gallon extra, taking total fuel capacity up to 4.75 gallons. Available in black or red, the SP is distinguished by silver stripes.

The $13,995 1198 looks to be the real bargain though, gaining the Ducati Data Analysis package that was previously exclusive to the S and R an a quickshifter that’s new this year.

Ducati’s clearly trying to add some sex appeal to a soon-to-be-replaced model, but this level of standard spec being added essentially for free is nevertheless extremely impressive. We’ll embed full details below.

Like. Will wait for the fire sale in 2012. My 1198S is practically parts bike now, so this will be an awesome replacement.

    1198 SP. O.M.F.G.

-Now that I got that out of the way-

I had a feeling the Quickshifter would be available in twenty-eleven. Ducati was kind enough to include the wiring diagram in my Multistrada 1200S’ owner’s manual. The tastiest bit I noticed is that the bike’s ECU has a dedicated pin-out ready to go for a….yup… Quickshifter.

I just hope they don’t do something retarded like requiring owners to purchase the full Termi. system in order to run the Quickshifter.

Damn, that is quite a bargain.

The SP is pretty good too, but when you tell car-folk what you paid, and why, they will tell you that you are an idiot, and you could have bought a new car for that. But you will know better. Much, much better.

I’ve had this conversation countless times. Next time I can add TTX and the WBK tank to justify the purchase. If they throw in Termi’s, I could actually justify the insane spending.

The wheels are the exact same forged Marchesinis as the 2010 1198s.
