The new 450cc capacity limit may finally end KTM’s domination of The Dakar rally, so there’s no time like the present for a special edition intended to capitalize on said domination. Of course, the KTM 990 Adventure isn’t the bike that gets raced in Argentina and Chile, but it is the bike getting the special edition treatment. This KTM 990 Dakar appears to gain blue and orange paint, some graphics, standard engine protection bars and not much else. This bike was due to be unveiled at EICMA next week alongside the company’s actual Dakar competitor, the KTM 450 Rally, but Bikes In The Fast Lane got the jump on them, leaking this embargoed image.

I don’t know what they’re lacing the pot in Austria with these days, but there’s a designer stoned off his ass for making another blue and orange KTM.

The 990 is a grand machine deserving of an equal livery. I’d say they’re doing pretty well with the current color wave, but this model looks like an afterthought.

Blue and orange is rad, always.

Am I alone in liking it? I dig the whole package. Such capable off-roaders too. Far better adventure bikes than any BMWs IMHO.

Actually, I’m on your camp too. By all metrics, that thing should be horrible. I’m quite sure I should be thinking this thing is repulsive.

Yet… I like it. Actually, I want it.

To me this bike, with it’s weird-ass fairing, is hideous, but I suspect it’s kind of like the difference in opinions regarding Cab over and conventional semi trucks. To some people, Cab over trucks will always just look wrong, no matter how good they may be.
