Ural Taiga 2WD: equipped to survive

Named after the barren northern forest that wraps around the globe from Canada to Siberia, the Ural Taiga 2WD is equipped to survive the harshest winter conditions. More than just a matte green paint job, the Taiga starts with a two-wheel drive Gear-Up and adds survival equipment like a winch, tow points and an auxiliary spot lamp. Although, when the going gets cold, it’ll likely be the huge windshield that you appreciate most.

Starting with it’s BMW R37-based 750cc, 40bhp opposed twin and two-wheel drive chassis, the Taiga adds:

Driver Windshield
Nose rack
Rear fender luggage rack
Engine skid plate
Black Fluid Canister & bracket
Black First Aid Box with 16 pcs survival kit
Hand winch with cover & towing points on the front and rear of the sidecar frame
Black Cordura tonneau & seat cover

While in the trunk (yes, there’s a trunk) you’ll find:

Manual Air pump
Maglite ® Flashlight with IMZ logo
Motorcycle Repair Tool kit
Tow Strap

We spent a couple days tearing around the Cascade Mountains on a 2WD Ural Patrol and Ural ST two-wheeler a while back and found the sidecar to be almost comically tough. Off-road, it has the capability of an ATV while on the road it, well, it also feels like an ATV, just a road-legal one. Grant flipped it into a ditch when he forgot the Ural understeers to the right and oversteers to the left, but the mountain sustained more damage than the bike. With a winch and extra carrying capacity, there should be literally nothing capable of stopping the Taiga and extras like the spot lamp and huge fairing will boost practicality too. What, never spot lighted deer using a sidecar?

Ural only plans to bring 27 of this special edition into America this fall, they’re available now.

      They’re road legal and can comfortably cruise on the highway at about 65mph, meaning you can go places on them.

        I was very close to buying one. The top speed scared me off. If you guys go to Canada on one (and prove it in pictures), maybe I will reconsider.

    My White German Shepherd would love that side car. The problem is, a side car defeats the purpose of having a survival bike, in my opinion. How are you going to split lanes when the zombie apocalypse hits and the freeways are all gridlocked?

      I’ve been contemplating the same problem. You could always keep the bike in the city and stash the sidecar at a remote, rural location?

      Alternately, the Urals really can go anywhere, just avoid roads altogether. An added advantage of doing that is zombies and marauding bands of cannibals will inevitably be drawn to and likely set up ambushes along roads.

        Zombpocolypse prep aside, I didn’t think these things can be separated from their sidecars. Aren’t they permanently attached?

        PS- The sidecar rig would make a more stable gun/chainsaw platform for mowing down said marauding bands.

          It takes 15 minutes to remove the sidecar (4 bolts and two connectors).

        Those are both good alternatives. And as Pete, below, mentioned, the missus (if you’ve got one) can wield the chainsaws and firearms.

        I’m thinking along the lines of a GS Adventure with a miniaturized pickup style box mounted over the back seat. I’m single, and all I care about is getting the dog out with me. Need to be able to get from Beverly Hills (where of course the Zombiepocalypse will start) over two mountain ranges and into the Mojave… and on to Colorado, where I plan to hole up. And ski. Been doing a lot of mountain biking lately, and there are definitely good fire roads over both ranges.

      I’ve ridden my one wheel drive extensively in six inches of snow in Maine. Here’s my plan. Who needs the freeway? I’ll keep a kayak on the Gowanus Canal and kayak to a remote location. Jet ski? Then clamp the boat to the sidecar frame and use it as a tub.

      I’ve had my ’96 Ural since 98 in Austin and beat the living hell out of it, including low water crossings, desert rides, and wheelieing the whole rig on South Congress when I ground down the hardened tip of the clutch throwout rod and had to stomp it into gear. I’ve done nothing more to it than change the oil and tighten a bolt or two. It’s been in Maine since 01, where I used it as a garden trailer, carrying firewood and rocks in the tub. And my kids and I play motorcycle rodeo on it, flying the punks in the chair. I’ll challenge anyone to barrel racing. These things add a whole new dimension to the control interface you’re all accustomed to. And I still ride a Guzzi cafe racer effectively too.

    Sidecars don’t fall over in the snow, 2WD sidecar rigs don’t get stuck in it either- well, up to about 8-10″ anyway. ‘Great fun. And if you are looking for a bike to mow down zombies, this would be the one- serious steel.

    I have carried a chainsaw in it, strapped it to the rack. See above. Cleared the trail in the woods to 5′ wide and run the rig on it.

    And it fits in the back of my 68 pickup as is, how I got it to Maine. Had some friends help me lift it in though.
