Excursion: 2010 Catalina Grand Prix

HFL, Positions -

Normally home to 150 Bison, 3,000 or so people and located 22 miles off the coast of Los Angeles, Santa Catalina Island hasn’t seen motorcycle racing for 52 years. Last weekend it did again, hosting a revival of the Catalina Grand Prix. Modern enduro machines competed alongside races for period scramblers on a mostly-dirt course just outside the island’s biggest town. Hell For Leather reader Sean Smith flew over to The Airport in the Sky in a Piper Comanche, snapping aerial shots on the way, and created this photo feature for us. Click below for the link.

The Hodaka brings back memories of a 10 year old’s (machine) lust… And yes… great photos.

It was pretty tricky to get that lined up. We had to circle around for a minute while the weather cleared up, and then get into position, and flop the plane on it’s side to get the wing out of the shot.

The clouds of blue smoke got a big smile.

I love that pic of the old timer and the young gun. Two eras converging. Good stuff man!

I was just at Bob’s Big Boys in Burbank ast night, met a man who competed on a 1950′s BSA, he competed years ago, and was an old timer that just wanted to get back out there and give the young guys a run for the money. So Cal has so many cool people.

    After a 52+ yr hiatus (rode in ’57 & ’58)
it was just great to be able to ride it once again (while the old body could still do it).
It was a dream come true thanks to “cuz Vinnie” -along with many very good helpers.
