A little something extra from Self Edge

Hell For Leather is extremely proud to announce that Self Edge is the latest partner to join our Lagniappe program and is offering discounts exclusively to our subscribers. Lagniappe is our way of saying thank you. We ask retailers to pass the budget they’d otherwise spend advertising directly to you, the subscriber, instead. That takes the form of substantial, in this case unprecedented, discounts. We don’t earn money on this, that money goes to you. This partnership with Self Edge is especially exciting because they absolutely do not discount this much under any circumstances. Except to HFL subscribers.

If you’re a Hell For Leather Subscriber, you’ll be able to take advantage of the following deal:

Any Iron heart product: 15 percent off, free worldwide shipping.

That includes Self Edge’s complete Iron Heart line: selvedge denim, flannel and work shirts, jackets, wallets, belts and bracelets.

This is a limited time offer. The discount will expire February 8, 2011 at 11:59pm.

To take advantage of this discount, subscribe, visit Self Edge and enter discount code “SExHFL012011” when you check out. It’s important to note that you must also enter your HFL username in the comments field when you check out with Self Edge. All discounted purchases will be verified with us.

The discount is also available in-store at Self Edge’s San Francisco, Manhattan and Los Angeles locations. So your identity can be verified, email denim@selfedge.com with your HFL username before you visit.

What the hell is a Lagniappe? It’s a Louisiana French word that means a small gift given to a customer by a business. It’s our way of saying thanks to our subscribers. It’s the 13th doughnut.

Lovely gesture, but have you actually looked at their online store to see what they have in stock for us ‘cyclists?

Not much on the shelves, I’m afraid. Oh, well, seeing as how I’m in Japan every few weeks, I might stop by their place and check out just what a $500.00 pair of jeans feels like. As if they would actually have ‘em in my Gaijin 38 waist (need the extra 2″ for ccw, IWB, y’know.)

  • jp182

Wow, they look like an awesome pair of jeans but alittle rich for my blood. I’ll need to wait till Christmas and hope someone really loves me ;-)

  • Jeremy

THIS IS AWESOME!!! Thanks Wes! I’m in the market for a new pair of jeans!!

  • Jon

WOOOOOOOOOO! I may have to shuffle some funds around, but this is way worth it! Thanks guys!

  • stempere

    Great news!
    I already have a pair of IH’s, wouldn’t mind buying a second one…

    Thanks.

  • Barry

Hmmm, $185 for a belt? $400 for a pair of jeans? Even with 15% off, that’s crazy(pants) money. That’s a set of race tires, race gas, and entry fees for me. I think I’ll stick to Goodwill for my “selvedge”(sic) look.

    • Chris Davis

Both “selvedge” and “selvage” are accepted spellings, each derivative of “self-edge”.

      • Barry

I’ve seen selvedge and selvage thrown around a bit online. It’s amusing to me, being the kind of person that bristles at marketing/sales words that imply something about the lifestyle I can buy if only I cough up the money. Quality is an excellent thing, and sometimes you do get what you pay for(my Wesco boots come to mind). I just know that I OBLITERATE jeans working on bikes in the pits/garage, and $5 used Levi’s make a lot more sense to the people I know that live/work the lifestyle image that is being portrayed on the site. That said, they do look like nice kit. Just not for me. Probably doesn’t help that the pictures remind me of all the hot rod and cruiser posers that swarm into Austin with a pomp and a wallet on a chain and play dress up during the local festivals.

  • brutus

so at $400 do you think they would last 20 years?? looks like they could. then again ive never had a pair of pants last over a year.

    • http://hellforleathermagazine.com Grant Ray

As long as you wash them, yeah. They’ll last 20 years.

      • ike6116

as long as you wash them and never gain weight*

        ftfy

        • brutus

yea super tempting, im a huge fan of investing in quality.

      • http://hellforleathermagazine.com Wes Siler

Actually the trick is not to wash them. I’ve washed mine like 3 times, 4 if you count wearing them while I rode that bike in the ocean.

        • http://hellforleathermagazine.com Grant Ray

Wes is lying. Don’t listen to him. I’m not saying wash them all the time, but once a month is good if you’re wearing them on a regular basis.

        • http://www.postpixel.com.au mugget

How does that work? I was looking into IH last week or so, I saw that they recommend not to wash them, or wash the minimal amount. So I get that washing actually wears the jeans a bit (same as any garment), but do they really last a month? They’d get a bit on the nose, eh? (Or is the trick that you don’t apply the same washing rule to your underwears?)

          • http://hellforleathermagazine.com Wes Siler

Grant told me that I should avoid personally endorsing the product, but I wear mine everday, to do all sorts of things, and I wash them extremely rarely, like once every 3 months.

If I turned over my cuffs right now, they’d be full of sawdust from chainsawing a cord of wood over Xmas.

            • http://selfedge.com kiya

Two weeks ago an employee of mine un-cuffed a pair of jeans we got in to be hemmed and two french fries fell out. True story.

              • http://hellforleathermagazine.com Wes Siler

                Kiya, that’s kinda gross.

            • http://www.postpixel.com.au mugget

Hahaha. Well I kinda go for the personal endorsements.

Also just found a comprehensive denim guide, covering denim care and everything else! http://www.oki-ni.com/page/technical?CMP=AFC-AW&attr=78888

I just wondering how they’d go in Australia. I am seriously considering it because it’s a pretty good deal, but I’m hesitant because we spend half the year sweating our asses off. Hmmm… it is coming into winter soon, though.

              • http://hellforleathermagazine.com Grant Ray

I like personal endorsements too, but when it reads like a love letter to your jeans because you do everything together, it’s a little much. I also have the IH belt, which I’ll still be wearing when I’m 60.

  • casey

yuss!!!! now here is the real question. Can I use this code in the store? or should I just go to the LA shop, try em on THEN order online?

    • http://hellforleathermagazine.com Wes Siler

Just email denim@selfedge.com ahead of time with your HFL username and the email address you subscribed with and they’ll know to look out for you.

      • casey

        awesome thanks!

  • Kerry

I appreciate the gesture but $380 for a pair of jeans?

    Am I missing something?

Yes, it must be something called style.

    • brutus

its style yep, but its the good understated type. Also, if you would rather buy 10 pair of jeans from a sweatshop in korea, and have to shop at a miserable place like the gap then have at it. I would rather buy one pair that i could have some pride in.

  • Archer

OK, I wear Omega watches, smoke Cuban cigars, and spend money on lots of similar things that I probably shouldn’t (like, for example, a Corsair-V and Vanson jacket for every day of the week, and a ‘scrip to this site…) but, $500.00 denims? With no Kevlar or pads??

The irony is the stance of this site on $16K bikes vs $4K 250′s…

  • ike6116

When I don’t like the price of something I don’t buy it. I don’t bitch at the people saying if you drop their name you’ll get a discount.

    • Archer

Hey, you’re right and I stand corrected.

  • je

Thanks for the option but I like to try on jeans before buying… The price is out of my my range but if I made better money I wouldn’t think twice about buying..

  • Andy Keech

get out the way gramma, the middle-aged men are on the warpath for frugality.

take it easy, these jeans are designer–but they aren’t rock ‘n republic or some other shit. low volume production from quality materials made in a developped part of the world. they are awesome, and worth the price if you think that conspicuous consumption is an important part of functioning within society (like having any or all of two cars, a house with a yard, and a litrebike that you use only for track days or summer afternoons).

eat a dick or quit whining, whatever cuts the noise easiest.

    • brutus

      ha!

  • HENRY

I was gonna buy a pair a few days ago. But waited after Wes hinted about a discount in another post. just ordered a pair of IH but I used a different email than the one I have registered here. Is this an issue?

    • http://hellforleathermagazine.com Wes Siler

As you can see in the below comment, Self Edge has great service. I’m sure it won’t be a problem.

      • HENRY

I emailed. 10 minutes later an email back. Sorted. My kind of service.

  • http://selfedge.com kiya

    Hello all,

    Kiya here from Self Edge.

I do understand that Iron heart products aren’t cheap. It’s really not until you’ve owned one that you will see exactly why these shirts, jackets, jeans, and belts cost what they do. The amount of time that it takes to produce these items is not only far longer than what it takes to make your average over-priced fashion jean, but the fabric is very unique. It’s comfortable but super heavy in weight, both their shirts and jeans age well over time as opposed to just looking “used” as most garments these days do.

If you can afford anything from Iron Heart it’s almost dangerous buying your first item, we find that most people go a bit nuts of the brand’s products after they’ve done their research about competing brands and found that IH really does make insane clothes and accessories in a way where only the Japanese can.

  • Dean

Nice work on this deal, dudes.

For those who think $400 is crazy, a single pair of Iron Hearts are absolutely worth the 10 pairs of shit jeans you could get in exchange. I’ve got a pair of the slims and they’re bulletproof.

  • Nick

This is a really good deal. Thanks guys!

Seriously, some people just don’t see the value in things. Why buy Oakleys for $200 when the gas station sells “foakleys” for $7? Why buy a Japanese motorcycle for $9,000 when you can get one built by children for free, if you just collect enough box tops?

These look like really good jeans and worth every penny, especially at $60 off. Maybe someday HFL will sign a discount deal with WAL-MART for all the members of the Cheap Bastards’ Motorcycling Club, but until then I’m giving this one some thought.

    • 2ndderivative

I nominate myself as a founding member of the CBMC.

      • http://www.thisblueheaven.com Mark D

        Panniers?? Its spelled M-I-L-K C-R-A-T-E

  • Devin

Are these jeans sturdy enough to replace motorcycle pants? My pants go over my jeans and are killer hot in the summer. Anyone know how many feet of ashphalt skidding you can get out of these?

If I could get away with wearing jeans to work it would be a no brainer.

    • http://hellforleathermagazine.com Wes Siler

Nothing can replace a pair of sturdy built-for-the-purpose leather motorcycle pants with armor, hidden stitching, double layers etc etc.

    • http://www.postpixel.com.au mugget

I guess it also depends where you ride and what you’re comfortable with, and what’s practical.

I wear a business shirt and trousers to work, so I ride with regular trousers. I stacked once going about 10 or 15km/h and just grazed/ripped the side of the trousers because I had a set of keys in that pocket. I would be happy for regular highway riding in a pair of sturdy jeans. But I am not going to go for a squirt through the hills in anything but my one-piece leathers.

Everything is a compromise. Don’t stress about it – just wear whatever you’re comfortable with!

  • ursus

The IH stuff looks great and I may get some. I see in the UK IH offer a double layer leg, logger pant, in coated duck.

    http://www.ironheart.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=122

That looks like something perfect to wear on the moto.

  • ErikT

uh…what is “stacking”? I presume, it’s just wearing jeans normally (w/out folding)?

I thought it sounded outrageous at first…but when you factor in the fact that a pair of levis usually lasts me about a year, it starts to make a little more sense.

  • FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

    @ErikT — Yes.
Not to rain on the parade, but I have a pair of Naked & Famous 19oz. jeans, and they are outstanding in fit and finish, and as heavy as I’d ever want a pair of jeans to be. The lighter weights are a little more comfortable. My personal Goldilocks zone is around 16oz. N&F is about 1/3 to 1/2 the price of IH. They also age beautifully if you don’t wash them every single time you wear them. EXTREME-ness is fine and all, but this denim geek stuff is way outta control.
Would I wear a pair of Iron Hearts if I somehow lucked into them? Well, fuck yeah I would. Nevermind…

  • Dan

Instead of causing conversations around how a motorcyclist (biker?) looks in his jeans, see if you can strike one of them laggin ape deals with a BEER company, that I could get in to that.
