Racer: David Roper

Racer-David-Roper

David Roper is the first and, until last year, the only American to win at the legendary Isle of Man TT. As Team Obsolete’s primary rider, the list of exotic machines he’s raced over the past three decades is longer than his beard. If he’s not racing, then he’s working on bikes to go racing on or, at the very least, talking about racing. I spent a morning at his Long Island home and, while he obligingly answered questions about ultra-exotic machines like Redman’s RC166 Honda and Pasolini’s 250/4 Benelli, he spoke of them all with a mild indifference. Unless, of course, he was talking about the Isle.

Damn, yo. But consider that as crazy as you think Roper is, your mom thinks you’re just as crazy for riding at all.

  • ontheroad

I’m loving these features on racers from years gone by, keep ‘em coming.

  • Tony

Wonderful. This really brings the history of it alive. This and the Joey Dunlop stories make the TT really come alive more than some youtube videos by someone sitting in a corner waiting for someone to crash.

  • Tony

    Alive!

  • Andreas

    Nice read and pics. Thanks.

  • dux

Real men exist, they’re just a rare breed these days

  • jonoabq

thanks, you just made my entire day at work vanish as if it never happened. love the stories.

  • parkwood60

Awesome! I was shopping for bikes in San Pedro, CA with a friend and this crazy old hoarder had about 100 bikes, that I could see. Amongst them was a crazy Bighorn based road race bike.

    • Scott

Kevin Cameron campaigned one in 1971.
(Big Horn = two-stroke rotary valve single cylinder dual-purpose motorcycle.)

And the man is still kicking ass in 350/500 GP & 500 Premier here in the states.

  • Joep

    Great story! Loved it!

  • Robert

Thanks for another great piece of work Grant! The real life experience you captured is brilliant in your presentation of photos and text. Much enjoyed.

    As usual, fantastic work.

I just got finished reading a section of Mark Gardiner’s “Riding Man” (inscribed by Mark; best Christmas gift ever!) when he talks about saying hello to the Faeries when you go over bridges. The Romance, with a capital R, of the Isle of Man is unparalleled.

Nice. I just finished my current book last night, so time to start Riding Man this evening.

Its quite good. Another fun fact I learned reading it; The most celebrated visiting rider to the Isle of Man TT in 1911? An America, one Mr. DesRosier, riding a 9 hp Indian twin motorcycle. Definitely checking the old genealogy on that one.

    • GoFasterPB

Agreed. Loving it so far. The only thing keeping me from treating it as a “how-to” on properly riding the isle is the missing middle step between a) my current riding status and c) being an AMA pro.

  • Andrew

    Thanks for a great story.

  • Jim

Great story from what seems to be a humble guy. Really enjoyed the pictures as well.

  • nymoto

So where does Roper reside now, because I would like to buy the man a beer.

    • http://hellforleathermagazine.com Grant Ray

Bar Matchless shows racing every Monday night during the season, you might catch him there.

  • seanslides

Totally worth $24 bucks a year. Wow.

  • Zane H

Some of your best work Grant
