Hell for Leather is excited to announce that Alpinestars is joining our Lagniappe program, offering exclusive giveaways to our subscribers. Lagniappe is our way of saying thank you, we ask brands to pass the budget they’d otherwise spend advertising directly to you, our subscribers, instead. This time, rather than significant discounts, Alpinestars is going to be giving away jackets, boots and gloves to HFL subscribers for free.

What the hell is a ‘Lagniappe?’ It’s a Louisiana French word that means a small gift given to a customer by a business. It’s our way of saying thanks to our subscribers. Rather than pursuing banner advertising, we’re leveraging our readership, influence and contacts to bring our subscribers exclusive and significant value.     It’s mostly a matter of practicality. I prefer the fit, strength and protection offered by the SMX. It seems perfect for long trips in the mountains and the very occasional track day. However, as I use my bike as a daily driver all year round, I like the idea of a boot I could wear into work, or out to dinner with all the added protections a normal pair of boots couldn’t really offer.

      Well, the Harlem’s offer a little more protection than a pair of Redwings or whatever, but the SMXs are another beast entirely. For a riding boot, get the SMX. For a ride-in-jeans boot, get the Harlem.

  I have a pair of the Nero Articolo 80 boots in black that i use for commuting.
  
  Pro: they’re quite comfortable with nice soft leather, easy to get on, and don’t have any stupid color accents (sidi).
  
  Con: even judged against incredibly low style bar set by the majority of men’s riding boots, the things are sinfully ugly. The worst part has to be the cowboy-inspired hump in the back, which is bigger than it usually appears in promo pictures, and looks ridiculous under any pant (my commuting pants are dainese Ike d-dry, which I generally like). I fantasize about ditching them, I’m just not sure what my other options are.

  You’re right, she doesn’t. Much as I want her to, the brat is insistent on clearing her debt before getting a bike. I keep telling her, “Baby, real riders aren’t responsible,” but she doesn’t listen. I even tried the tricks that I learned from the Harley Sales Guide. No luck. I want to be the only person on my bike and she wants to be in control, so it’s just a matter of time.
  
  She’s about a year away from her goal, maybe less. And she’d be way closer to her own bike if she didn’t have to worry about budgeting for gear, too.
