According to news posted just minutes ago on their Facebook page, the Catalina Grand Prix has very sadly been denied for 2011 by the Santa Catalina Island Company’s board of directors. The news comes a surprise as all accounts of last year’s race pointed towards a successful event. Reasons for the board’s decision remain to be disclosed, but we’ll be reaching out for more details.

Thanks for the tip, Christine!

Shit! First I heard about it. I was hoping to redeem myself this year. At least I won’t have to worry about it happening the weekend of the 24 Hours of Lemons race I am planning on running in.

Damn! After watching that Astars video, I really wanted to partake in this year’s events! Maybe 2012???

  • Christine

I’m so incredibly bummed about this. I was lucky enough to attend last year and as Jamie Robinson’s videos clearly illustrate – a great time was had by all. The crowd was respectful and polite and the business owners loved it in what is an otherwise a dead time of year. Sure would like to know why it was declined…

  • Brad

    tourism dollars are bad apparently.

That’s totally weak. Send us the address for the board so we can write them letters. I have lived in So. Cal for almost 20 years and have never been to Catalina. The only reasons to go in the past have been scuba lessons, camping, or getting drunk on an island. With the race last year, that changed. Although I could not go last year (due to my important business telemetry data important stuff excuse), it seems like a great “revival” for the island. Plus given the historical signifigance (HFL needs a spell check) it would be awesome if it they came back.

Actually, I’m pretty sure that the GP falls into that third category if you’re not racing.

You folks should all write the Catalina City council: http://www.cityofavalon.com/content/2517/2520/default.aspx

And don’t be afraid to write an open letter to the newspapers on the island: http://beta.catalinaislander.org/

When the City of Lake Elsinore decided not to run their grand prix through town in 2007, there were a lot of angry calls, letters, and emails and in 2009 it was back and better than ever: http://www.myvalleynews.com/story/34094/

I emailed the mayor. I’ll post his response for all to enjoy.

This is a huge bummer! I went last year and it was so awesome, that I was prepared to sign up to race this year if they had it. A great time was had by all, but there was a lot of talk around the island that it wouldn’t happen again for a while.

  • Trent

I’m glad I didn’t miss the race, just wish I would have ridden in it.

I’m truly sad to say I called this as soon as last years was announced…I had a feeling it was going to be a one time thing. I was hopeful after hearing about how the event went, but I’m definitely not too surprised.

  • Surj

Goddamnit. One of the guys I work with went last year. I was hoping it would happen again so I could make it out. Goddamnit.

First the Catalina wine mixer, now this. For shame

  • Denzel

    At best…lack of vision.

  • Michael

    I suspect local politics.
