Dress up drag racing with Deus Bali

Two weeks ago a disused construction site in Bali saw a motley collection of small-capacity Indonesian motorcycles gather for a fancy dress party turned drag race. The strip was nothing but a flattened bit of mud, gravel and dirt and the fastest bike there was apparently an SR400, but damn, some consequence-free motorcycling looks like fun. The bikini babe? She’s a motocross racer who kick-started that Yamaha bare foot.

      Yeah, it’s times like this when I really want to live somewhere where people ride bikes, you can get away with actually doing things on bikes and life is about more than working all the damn time. Oh right, that’s why I’m moving to LA in three weeks…

        Every time I button up a shirt and put on slacks it feels a little more alien to me. One day I’m going to snap and move somewhere where English is a second language. It’ll be warm, I’ll ride a 250cc something or other, find myself a good woman and live like my inner madman says I should every day.

        Kind of like the exact opposite of LA other than the warm part. Just don’t lose your cynical east coast-ness and I’ll re-up every year.

          don’t worry, there are plenty of places here that english is a second language.

          traffic here isnt so bad on a bike, and we only work as hard as we have to so we can keep our bikes runnin, keep beer in the fridge, and keep gas in the tank.

        Say you’ll come back and maintain a presence here, or some Cali disaster will wash you back up in NY again. I liked having a NY based mag, that was something that made you unique, homegrown. Your original appeal was road tests by Newtown Creek and Grant’s precise, data-driven graphs.

        And the weather’s just starting to improve here.

        But it’s probably not a bad tactic to move from reader base to reader base, doing stories about local scenes.

        If you have to live in the US, there are worse places than Portland, OR.

        It has a “love life”, relaxed West Coast feel. It does not have the San Fran/ LA/ Seattle pretentiousness/ seriousness. It’s tough to get a job– any job– here: unemployment is +10%. You have Master’s Degrees serving you coffee. The music scene is cool. The bar scene is cool. You can wear a “fuck you hipster” t-shirt, and it’s accepted. You can drive a backyard-made biodiesel/ cooking oil-powered sidecar contraption and no one will look at you twice. Marijuana’s more or less legal, boutique distilleries make great spirits and motorcycle culture abounds.

      My friend moved from LA to Bali, married a Balineese dude, had a kid and now runs a bone jewlery business and motorcycle shop there. She loves it. The place is sick. It’s cheap and the people are cool. We should all go. (After I change out of my tie and slack, Oh wait!!! It casual Friday!!! No Tie!!! I’m in heaven.)

          I moved from Canada to southern Thailand 3 months ago. I’m making the same per day as I used to per hour. I miss my Ducati, but hooning a TW225 sure is fun!

          Make the move, its a better life I’d say. At least more fun and funnier.

      Once SOP at biker gatherings: burning-of-the-Honda ritual.
      Its preliminaries included draining the oil and running WFO ’til it seized.
      More than once the crowd couldn’t wait that long (Honda) and the bike would be dispatched by other means before it was set fire.
      But then the pirates landed …

    The idea that these people have made life choices that enable them to revel and share and love life. They should be chained to desks, have stultifying corporate jobs, and toil for The Man, in misery.
