Racing Catalina on a $650 Yamaha

Back in December, the Catalina Grand Prix was held for the first time in 52 years. Our buddy Jamie Robinson, with the help of Alpinestars, took part on a 1979 Yamaha YZ400 that he bought for just $650 on the Monday before the race. Here’s his story.

That bike looks a lot like my old ’75 DT400…plenty of 2-Stroke power but handling was for shite! I can’t imagine trying to race on it.

I’ve ridden one these YZ’s extensively and the handling and power-band are very good. It was arguably the best big bore MXer of it’s time and would no doubt be well suited for the Catalina GP.
