Thunderdrome, Kalamazoo, this weekend

Everyone’s favorite debaucherous two-wheeled demolition derby is departing Detroit this weekend for a road trip across the state to the Gilmore Car Museum outside of Kalamazoo. There, a 1/4-mile oval flat track will play host to minibike, moped, scooter and pit bike racing. It costs just $20 and your sanity to enter, an open track day (for the above classes) on Saturday sweetens the deal.

If you have the means, we highly recommend you participate:

Thunderdrome!

My Razz 50 didn’t quite have the top speed for the oval, but the Gilmore track is supposed to have left and right turns so watch out! I might actually have a chance.

You going to do any shooting?

      • NickP

I’m volunteering on Saturday and Sunday but I might have some down time, at least during practice. I’ll bring my gear in case I can get some shots in.

Awesome. You know where to send ‘em. Have fun, I’ll be at the one in Detroit in September.

          • NickP

            thanks!

Nick, it looks like they’re only doing the oval at Gilmore. I wanna ride my big boy bike out to the show, but if I can find someone with room to bring the Aprilia and my gear I’ll race too.

    • NickP

I can bring it for you! I’ll have room in my truck. I’ll be getting there Friday night or Saturday morning and camping until Sunday night.

Nevermind. I think my fuel pump just took a shit. Again.

        • NickP

Damn, well if you get it fixed let me know, I’d be happy to bring it out.

  • Sam

This is so much cooler than NYC’s Fastest.

      It really is.

  • kinsler

that rainbow ped on the left is called “the internette.” a rad rainbow colored powder coated motobecane.

    • Steven

      I NAMED THAT SHIT

  • Spencer

Ill be there racing in the minibike class! Should be a great weekend, they mentioned 5500 bikes showed up at the Gilmore’s motorcycle show last year.

  • Kerry

I know this is a peddy and small bike event, but anybody else feel like there should be a class for cycle karts? I mean nothing says board track style outlaw racing than plywood go karts that look like things from the turn of the last century and made out of discarded motorcycle parts.

For those who don’t know what cycle karting is:

Propose a class to them and bring enough participants to fill it and they’ll do it.

    • Spencer

It would be very cool but there was only 3 karts at the last event let alone cyclekarts.

  • Kerry

    There-in lies the rub wes…..

….though I always did need an excuse to build a cycle kart out of all the cb750 parts.

  • Kevlar

Awesome! I live in Kzoo, and was already planning on going to Gilmore for the vintage motorcycle show, but I had no idea this was going on too. This makes it an order of magnitude more awesome. Wish I had something I could enter…

Any plans to bring this to the west coast?

There’s enough cool shit out there. Let us have something you don’t!

Andy – here’s your chance. Time for a west coast franchise. I’ve been looking around Kansas City for a venue, but can’t find a suitable one.
