A gyrocam, a ZX-10R and the Nurburgring

MotoGP-style gyrocams — which stay upright as the bike leans — are helping to bring a new dimension to onboard bike videos. Somehow, the counterintuitive perspective better conveys the experience not only of leaning, but the rest of the ride too. Here, Bridgestone tire development rider Tim Röthig throws down an eight minute lap of the Nurburgring aboard a 2011 Kawasaki ZX-10R. We gotta get us a few of these things. And a trip to the ‘Ring.

Aren’t you supposed to pass the bugs on the outside?

  • Sean Smith

Looks like I found a distraction for the next 8:32. Awesome.

    • http://hellforleathermagazine.com Wes Siler

      Fewer distractions, more writing!

  • apriliajoe

    Loved it! Great perspective shot!

  • Coreyvwc

I honestly didn’t know the Ring was that epic, wow! If ever there was a place that you legitimately “needed” a Liter bike to have fun, this is it!

    • Kevlar

Why would you “need” a liter bike to have fun? If anything, I think a 600 would be MORE fun, because you’ll be faster through the corners. I don’t know about you, but I find corners much more fun than straightaways (the only time you could conceivably ‘need’ the extra power). In fact, the unofficial lap record for the ‘ring on a motorcycle is a 7:17 by a modified GSXR600!

      • Coreyvwc

Did you notice how long the straits were? An off the shelf ss bike (like the one I have) would be pegged out in 6th half way down the strait… I agree that corners are far more fun, but I also don’t like being on the rev limiter either. This type of environment doesn’t even exist in America, so when at the Ring why not have some fun on a machine suited for the job?

  • Kyle

Puckered up my butthole at 4:40

    holy crap

  • fodderbox

    Beautiful. He owned those apexes.

  • http://www.postpixel.com.au mugget

Heck yes. Nurbergring is on my ‘must do’ list. I’d like to think that I’ll be able to reel off something near a 10-minute lap, but they reckon there’s no way you can learn the course in under a few years. Epic indeed.

Get on a game console to at least familiarise yourself with the layout.

      • MotoRandom

Playstation 2 and the game Tourist Trophy. It’s the only motorcycle game that has the Ring in it. Graphics are pretty good, decent handling and dozens of bikes to choose from. Go into photography mode and you don’t have to deal with the stupid ghost on your 2nd+ laps. Great way to kill some hours in the winter time. I’ve run this track so much I can actually tell where they are in these videos. Running under 8 minutes is kinda tough at first but feels good when you get the hang of it.

        • http://www.ninja250blog.com R.Sallee

Photography mode! Why didn’t I think of that?

        • Joe

          I love that game!

  • Sabathius

Great googly moogly that’s flying! Watching it you can feel his fatigue build as the run progresses.

  • dux

He’s only running a “quick” lap. Just imagine a “fast” one. Segoi!

  • Gene

Wow. Absolutely massive amounts of ass was hauled. And I didn’t see a single oncoming bike cross the centerline not even once!

  • lupin

is this the guy who snatched val’s camera last season?

  • 1

Was a sunny day today, so there were a few toys out on the road. Rode past a couple new lambos and a front engined Ferrari whatever it is. All sounded pretty dope. I blitzed off through the traffic. Supercars are nice, but seem like vain jewlery compared to sports bikes. Even F1 coverage bores me whilst Moto GP is more than watchable.

Seeing this vid is so supercharged. Bikes are the shit.

  • Tony T.

    Oh barf!

    • http://twitter.com/metabomber Jesse

I found the gyro cam incredibly disorientating at first, but after a second watch… wow, is he hauling ass.

  • coredump

I’m impressed with how smooth the guy is through out the video. I wonder how IOMTT riders would take to the ring? Much smaller course and less pubs to crash into.

  • runrun

a zx-10 that doesn’t wag it’s bars? what will they think of next?

  • Kevlar

Cool video. That gyro-cam setup is pretty sweet. Surprised he ‘only’ ran a 7:50 though. This guy did it in 7:26! http://youtu.be/W2KnufuYK5M (another great video).

  • Edward

The sensation of speed in this video is crazy. Seems much higher than on-board from races on normal circuits. Maybe because he is at such high speeds for so long?

    • Edward

What would make this video even cooler is a display with info from on board telemetry, like a g-force cross, throttle opening/brake pressure displays, and speed. I would love to have a better understanding of what forces the bike and he are experiencing, where/how he is braking, and how fast he is going.

  • zato1414

Reminds me of me going to work… in my dreams! Great vid, great rider, great machine. I kept trying to look over the wind screen!

  • http://www.tripleclamp.net Sasha Pave

I envision some dorky looking German sitting completely upright the entire time, smiling and dragging his toe sliders around the track.

  • TreMoto_Eddie

So yeah, gyro cam, where can I get one for a gopro?

  • Thom

    @ Wes

Getting the camera’s …… no problem ( though if in your shoes I’d try for a Comp or at least a Pro Deal from the company )

But a day at the ” Ring ” ? Now that just may become an insurmountable problem in the near future . If you hadn’t heard , the ” Ring ” is in very deep financial shit , owing everyone and his/her brother a ton of €’s : changing their accessibility and fees charged almost weekly of late . Even the manufactures are running into problems with the current Debacle that has become ” The Ring ” ( of doom )

So get yer hynies over there like toot suite , before ” The Ring ” becomes Nurburgring Condominiums , Offices & Disney for Cars Theme Park ;o(

To that effort, Save The Ring can be found at http://savethering.org/ on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/SaveTheRing and on twitter at http://twitter.com/savethering . Maybe it’s not as worthy a cause as savethechildren.org, but while there’s a plentiful and growing supply of children, there’s only one Ring . . . to rule them all.

    • http://hellforleathermagazine.com Wes Siler

The Ring isn’t going anywhere. Every track in the world is in deep financial doodoo right now. That whole save the ring thing is a BS publicity stunt. NJMP just declared bankruptcy, and they’re still going strong.

Do you have an in with the camera maker?

      • CCarey

When even Sabine Schmitz (my future wife btw) is getting the word out about the horrible mismanagement as of late I’m inclined to believe it is a bit more than just a publicity stunt. That being said bankruptcy is the least of the worries, the multi-million dollar unused theme park and empty hotels on the other hand are a clear indication the new owners are trying to turn the ring into an uber expensive playground for rich douchebags who care less about driving and riding than the do about appearing to do those things.

Had to watch it again… I’m gonna be late for work! That Rothig sombitch can ride . Those wheelies almost dumped me out of my chair. Again, a great video, sure to be one of my all time favs, thanks.

  • Ted

Every time a video uses the cliche of a rider closing their visor as a cue to start the action all I can think of is the Business Time video from Flight of the Conchords.

“When I close my visor you KNOW it’s business time”

    • runrun

oh yeah, i know what you’re tryin’ to say…

  • Skank NYCF

I’d love to give that place a GO!! Track looks like a fun. I searched and couldn’t find any track days for bikes.

    • Bjoern

The MOTORRAD action team offers many Nürburgring Nordschleife track days only for bikers every year. Their site is http://www.actionteam.de – I dunno if they have an english Website, but there are always a lot of brit Bikers and they have an instructor (Neil, great guy) from the UK. They gotta have partners at least in the UK.
I’ll be there again in early September. The action team will be on the Nordschleife from 1st till 6th September. And dont forget: The Superbikes will be at the Nürburgring GP Track this weekend. It’ll be a time to remeber ;)

      • Skank NYCF

Im in Europe 3-4 times a year. Late July and all of August would be the time for me to go there. To bad the site isn’t in English. But good looking out and if you got anymore info send it my way at nycfastest@gmail.com. Thanks

        • Tony T.

Here is the translated page with all the Nordschleife track days listed: Google translate page

          • Skank NYCF

            Thanks.

            • Bjoern

And here’s their mail address: info@actionteam.de
              Have fun mate!

              • Skank NYCF

you the man. i just checked it on google map. its about a 8 hour drive from my house in Hungary. im emailing them now.

  • Murat

I’ve searched the web and seen laptimes ranging from 7:26 to 7:40s for the Nissan GTR. I wish you guys could do a follow-up video to the GTR vs RSV in the Ring. It seems that the Ring favors supercars though…

  • Ratlanta

For some reason it reminded me of those mechanical arcade driving games where you move the car in relation to the oncoming track…or a game of Tempest
