Wes fall down go boom. Again.

wes-arm-2011

As some of you may have seen of his Facebook page, Wes had himself yet another epic bender sometime Saturday afternoon. I wasn’t there and Sean is currently occupied taking Wes to a specialist, but after a good bit of texting and confirmation via IM, I’ve been able to piece together a story of what went down.

Wes, Sean and Sean’s buddy went camping around Big Bear this weekend, above Lake Arrowhead. At the time of the crash Wes was piloting the Ural sidecar, Sean was on the Yamaha WR250R and Sean’s buddy was on his personal KTM450. According to Sean, they were roughly 18 miles away from the campsite and approximately 4 miles from the nearest paved road. The corner on which the carnage took place was given a Rally rating by Sean as a 3 out of 6. Sean’s buddy was leading, followed by Wes and Sean, respectively. Below are the two versions of the crash provided by Wes and Sean, which I’ve spliced together from texts and IMs.

Wes:
“EPIC crash.”

Sean:
“It was really sad. Like 8 second long. It finally ended with the front end digging in and hitting a post.”

Wes:
“Rolled it at 50 ish.”

Sean:
“Maybe, 35-40?”

Wes:
“Flew the car, caught it, understeer, flew, understeer, flew.”

Sean:
“The sidecar never came up more than about 3 inches.”

Wes:
“Big downhill corner. Right hander…”

Sean:
“Maybe a 3 out of 6 if you wanted to use rally labels.”

Wes:
“log…”

Sean:
“At that point, the bike was going maybe 8 mph. He held on for dear life as he went over the bars and that’s what snapped his wrist. I think that there may have been a large rock or some concrete where the front wheel dug in too because the whole front suspension is pretty mangled.”

Wes:
“No vid unfortunately.”

Sean:
“It was one of the more painful things I’ve watched.”

  • Mike Brooklyn

    Feel better Wes!

I’m also kinda jealous that Jalopnik hears about this first.

    • http://hellforleathermagazine.com Grant Ray

Jalopnik didn’t hear it first. I just waited until I got Sean’s half of the story.

      • http://www.muthalovin.com the_doctor

So it wasn’t even 2 wheels! Jalopnik needs to fact-check.

        • Ryan

I’m more surprised the tone of the article was so mean.

          • http://hellforleathermagazine.com Wes Siler

Its not mean, its friends making fun of each other.

      • Mike Brooklyn

First we start fact checking, then we end up writing in depth stories, getting interviews, hacking into murder victims voicemail to get the scoop, then the entire publication is shot down! This is a slippery slope i say, i demand my minor internet celebrity gossip, and i demand it quickly!

  • Kirill

Ouch. At least he didn’t tip the sidecar over.

    • Sean Smith

He totally tipped the sidecar over.

      • Kirill

Yeah forgot to add “on himself” and made myself look silly

Hope someone took pics of that.

  • Miles Prower [690 Duke, MTS 1100]

Who’s going to give you a custom paintjob for your cast… Maybe one that goes well with your helmet.

Best of luck to you Wes. Heal quickly.

    • http://moto-mucci.blogspot.com/ Moto-Mucci

Alpinestars. And they should make him one for the rest of his body with the amount of times I read about crashes on this site.

    • Greg

Read quickly and saw blowjob instead of paintjob…might want to put in for one of those too, just sayin

  • http://www.brammofan.com Brammofan

Love the back-and-forth. Sean gives no quarter to any embellishment provided by Wes.

Hope you get fixed up soon, Wes, and that you’ll be at Mazda (Laguna Seca) in a week-and-3/4.

  • goodcat8

My crash stories go the same route.
Me:”Must have done a complete forward flip landing on my head.”
Friend:”He fell over and was flailing around like he was mentally retarded.”

    Heal fast.

    • Plotts

      LOL

  • http://www.muthalovin.com the_doctor

Awesome. It sucks that Wes crashed, but it makes you kids seem somewhat human.

    Feel better soon, Wes.

  • insomnia

Oh that truly sucks. Bright side=you had good friends there to point and laugh, and dispute your version of what happened. Heal quickly!

  • Kevin

Was this the same arm that had the metal pins inserted after the last crash? I hope you have a quick and 100% recovery.

    • noone1569

He said on his facebook it was the same arm.

  • http://cynic13th.livejournal.com/ cynic

    Ouch.

Crashing sucks, but breaking bones in the crash is just not good.

Hope you you’re feeling better soon.

  • Aienan

I think you guys take testing your crash gear a little too seriously.

Not that we don’t appreciate the dedication.

  • je

Pretty soon no vendor is going to give you a bike to demo.. sissy

  • http://www.twitter.com/wessilerfanclub sean (the roommate)

All of your well wishing thoughts should be directed at those of us who have to put up with the man child. If only he would start chipping away at his ego and not his bones, now we’re stuck with him all day as he can’t go anywhere.

    • Kevin

Have you considered hiring a stunt double for Wes?

      • Terry

We should all chip in and buy him one of those “I do all my own stunts” t-shirts.

        • Chris

Or maybe a black T-shirt that says on the back, “If you can read this, Wes fell off”.

          • Greg

            Haha awesome

      • http://www.twitter.com/wessilerfanclub sean (the roommate)

you saying it would be better if i got hurt instead?

    • Kirill

      I can feel the love!

    • http://www.facebook.com/beastincarnate Ben Incarnate

Here’s to hoping for a speedy recovery, Sean!

      Happy?

      • http://www.twitter.com/wessilerfanclub sean (the roommate)

yes, very. if he asks me to give him a sponge bath one more time, grant will be hetero-life-partnerless.

        • http://www.facebook.com/beastincarnate Ben Incarnate

Grant’s going to learn this lesson sooner or later: long distance relationships don’t work. Sure, there’s a promise to move closer. But it all falls apart when the possibility of a sponge bath comes up. Again and again.

          • http://www.twitter.com/wessilerfanclub sean (the roommate)

            hahahahahahaha. well said sir.

          • http://www.brammofan.com Brammofan

            What Ben said. +1

  • Steve

    Best wishes, Wes!

  • Roman

That looks like it might hurt a little…

  • Cameron

Didn’t he just bail 2 weeks ago? At least he gets plenty of opportunities to do real-world testing of gear…

  • http://rider49er.blogspot.com Mark D

May have been a 3 out of 6 on an proper MX bike, but I would imagine it’d be bit harder to navigate on that dinosaur of a Ural.

But don’t worry, that won’t stop anybody from busting your balls.

  • NickP

Best wishes for an EPIC recovery :)
    and Grant, nice graphic btw.

  • Bobby

Glad you are ok. Any pics of the bike damage?

OK Wes , this aint good !

I’ve barely been a member here for what ……… two months max and you’ve had how many crashes ?

Now if you were some neophyte rider , I’d understand ( I’d be a bit concerned , but I’d understand )

But as I know you’re a damned experienced rider , well honestly my concern is heightened .

Seems to me Wes that there may be a possibility , other than the type of riding you may be doing lately , that there is something else ( unrelated to your actions/skills ) that might be wrong .

This many falls in this short of time . It might be worth a General look over by the MD’s to confirm there is no outside ( disease etc ) source of these crashes .

I’d have it checked out there mate if I were you .

I’m kind of liking you in one piece and keeping HFL together if you don’t mind .

  • http://www.facebook.com/beastincarnate Ben Incarnate

“At that point, the bike was going maybe 8 mph. He held on for dear life as he went over the bars and that’s what snapped his wrist.”

That’s sick to imagine. Also, something to consider. I’ve heard the advice of going limp and surrendering to the inevitable once you’ve crossed that line; sure seems easier to preach than put into practice.

At least there’s bragging rights for your grip strength right there.

    • http://www.twitter.com/wessilerfanclub sean (the roommate)

      hope it was worth it?

      • http://www.facebook.com/beastincarnate Ben Incarnate

Sometimes, a man has to prove a point. Not all men will go the distance to prove it.

        • http://www.twitter.com/wessilerfanclub sean (the roommate)

“and of course i have to be the macho man and try and save the thing. if i were any kind of intelligent i would have bailed” – wes at lunch yesterday.

          • http://www.facebook.com/beastincarnate Ben Incarnate

Macho Man impressions lead to severe injury and death.

Part of me died typing that. Ooo yeeeeah.

            • http://www.twitter.com/wessilerfanclub sean (the roommate)

              amazing.

          • http://rider49er.blogspot.com Mark D

If he was any kind of intelligent, he wouldn’t have been trying to keep up with two fast MX bikes on 600 lb Russian Sidecar.

            • vegetablecookie

ding! ding! ding! We have a winnar!

…and, if intelligence had anything to do with it…most of us would have given up the sport long ago.

              • http://rider49er.blogspot.com Mark D

We are all clearly misfits and mental defectives for doing what we do, and how we do it.

    • http://plugbike.com/ skadamo

I agree with going limp in most situations.

I rode my dirtbike into a tree at about 10 to 15 mph (who knows the truth but not too fast). Tried to throw myself to the side so my torso and head would not hit and broke my hand on the tree or the barkbuster.

I think I came out better with the broken hand than if I had gone limp but who knows. The choice definitely broke my hand though.

      • http://www.muthalovin.com the_doctor

“I agree with going limp in most situations.”

        hehehehehehehe

        • http://www.facebook.com/beastincarnate Ben Incarnate

I laughed hard at this one, too. But it’s not tough to get a chuckle out of me.

On some TV show last night, I overheard the turn of phrase “butt bag cocktail” and I was worthless the rest of the night.

          • http://plugbike.com/ skadamo

I did say “most” situations :D There are pills for the rest.

Speaking of pills, how are the meds treating you Wes?

            • http://hellforleathermagazine.com Wes Siler

Not a big painkiller person. The whiskey’s good though.

              • Jacob

Hope it’s the truly good stuff.

                • http://www.twitter.com/wessilerfanclub sean (the roommate)

It’s not. It’s the cheap shit I keep around for when randoms come over. In the quantities he’s drinking it, quality doesn’t matter much.

          • http://www.muthalovin.com the_doctor

Damn, butt bag cocktail! That also made me chuckle. Comedy GOLD in these comments.

  • Audun

Looks painfull! Hope for a speedy recovery, we need your sharp and intelligent pen working again soon! Best wishes!

  • walter

    Wow!

Nothing like a good summer cast to remind you and your friends to be careful.

    Get well soon.

    • Kirill

Speaking of friends and casts, wonder how many dicks will be drawn on it by the time its off

      • http://www.twitter.com/wessilerfanclub sean (the roommate)

don’t worry. we have epic plans in the works.

        • HammSammich

Sharpies combined with pain med induced docility…I’m sure the results will be fantastic. Now you just have to “convince” Wes (aka, blackmail him) to publish pics of his desecrated cast on HFL!

          • http://www.twitter.com/wessilerfanclub sean (the roommate)

i have a sep twitter acct just for that

            • HammSammich

              @wessilerfanclub?

              • http://www.twitter.com/wessilerfanclub sean (the roommate)

                Aye.

  • Steven

that 8mph thing is food for thought. I broke my arm when I fell off a stump I was standing on. people probably mangle themselves doing that hippie wobbly tightrope bullshit. Nightclub girls fuck themselves up falling off of their stilettos.

I guess everything can mean broken bones except sitting on the couch.

  • ktaisa

    heal up quick yo

did they put some metal rods in ya arm?

if so, you got to post those pics too

(in between all the painkiller naps)

  • T Diver

You Xaused it. Sad face emoticon.

    • Edward

His crash at Brno was bizarre and painful looking. Something tells me his friends aren’t teasing him about it.

  • andy727

Glad to hear that it will heal up nicely, and in a cast. Here’s to a quick recovery!

  • Nik

    Serious summer bummer.

  • JMS

That picture on Jalopnik makes you look like the Westley from the Princess Bride.

    Best Wishes

  • http://plugbike.com/ skadamo

Riding a bike with sidecar? Kinda blows the Jalopnik story. :D (2 wheels bad)

    Heal up man!

  • http://www.muthalovin.com the_doctor

Please use all of our subscription monies for titanium bone-parts, not bike parts.

    • aristurtle

He’s already got steel rods in there from last time. Next time he should have them upgraded to carbon fiber.

  • http://twitter.com/BuddyJesus Peter

So I was right… Wes does ride a grandpa trike. ;)

  • OC

I wet down this weekend too. Thankfully I only suffered a small cut on my knee and a bruised calf muscle. My gear has paid for itself many times over. A fellow biker passing by helped me get my bike out of the ditch next to the road. With the exception of a broken mirror the bike was fine and I rode home safely.
    Get well Wes!

  • ike6116

awful choice of words, “bender” makes it sound like he was boozing.

    • HammSammich

How do you know that he wasn’t? He was camping, after all…

  • RT Moto

Get well soon Wes! You’ll be back out in no time. Screw Jalopnik and the nay sayers, quitters never win!

    get well soon Wes!

  • Restless Lip Syndrome

Aw Wes! That sucks so bad!!!!! Healing from a broken wrist is not fun, so heal fast dude.

  • CCarey

Damn Wes if you keep this shit up all us subscribers are gonna have to pitch in and buy you some wristguards like little kids wear when rollerblading. Obviously yours will need to be made of carbon fiber and titanium though.
    Heal up soon man

  • jason

Bah! Just get him one of those Steven Hawking voice typing things so we can get the “story” from “Lefty” Wes.
    Heal up dude.

  • Core

… Man, which is going to cost more, the bike or the arm?

    Anyways, get well soon!

  • nymoto

    Fall down go boom… Again
Don’t lie, A tattoo Model beat you up…. Again
    Puss

    • nymoto

Oh yeah and get well dude – I heard trannys love dude’s with casts.

  • FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Get well soon. What was the bill?

  • Dan

Need a PT referral? There’s a clinic in Marina that’s really fantastic. They work you hard, but results come fast – I was back on the track at 8 weeks after knee surgery. Let me know.

  • debra

i hope you feel better soon, Wes. get back out on the road…take care

  • http://www.damiengaudet.blogspot.com damien

I once broke my wrist playing soccer…your story is better.

I just looked at the Jalopnik pic of you and it appears you got a haircut?! WTF? Say it ain’t so!

    Oh yeah, get well soon!

  • Robert

WOW, that fracture is moderately displaced. Going to need reduction and fixation. Ulnar styloid is fractured too…looks on this one image it may be an old and nonunited ulnar styloid fracture. Good luck.

  • noone1569

Psh we all know that Wes just wanted to win the Scar-Off this year. He’s dedicated, I’ll give him that.

  • runrun

that’s a pisser, wes. hope you’re not lefthanded. heal up soon.

  • markbvt

    Ouch indeed! That sucks!

I snapped my wrist last fall (and also a bone in the other hand), had a nice titanium plate installed, and was going so nuts that I went for a ride a little over a week later. Ended up riding quite a bit the rest of the autumn. Worked out fine with the aid of a throttle rocker.

Heal up soon, Wes. You’ll be back on a bike in no time.

  • http://www.tripleclamp.net Sasha Pave

    Holy MotherCusser! Speedy healing Wes!

  • jphphoto

BUMMER, I guess this story is on hold! Heal quickly Wes!!

Why take a boring 4-wheeled cage to go camping and pretending it’s the end of the world when you can take a new Triumph Tiger 800 XC, a Yamaha WR250R and a Ural instead? HFL will be bombing around Big Bear all weekend and updating constantly. Hit us up in the comments or on our [...]

Just moved, and have been away from the Net for a few weeks. Last time I moved, Wes broke his arm. Now this.

I guess I better stay here a while or he’ll never have a chance to heal up.

    Get well soon, sir!

    Wes
The left coast seems to be a dangerous place. Get well soon.
