PSA: don’t free-rev your motor

Kaboom!

This man’s Ninja is on fire as a result of free-revving the motor for twenty seconds. Is he an idiot? Is it instant karmic pay-back? Is he just unlucky? Probably all three. Regardless, free-revving a motor is a bad idea. 100+horsepower with nowhere to go wreaks havoc on engine internals. Valves float, cranks vibrate in ways they were never designed to and it’s not uncommon to see connecting rods buckle and snap under this kind of abuse. The smoke you see just before the bike is engulfed in flames is oil hitting the red-hot headers.

I wish this would happen every time one of these asshats does this.

    • Elvis

Nothing would make me happier. I never knew the risks of living near a stop light.

    • RT Moto

      If only life were fair…

  • Johndo

he should have been sitting on it.

  • BenP

I only feel bad for the guy parked next to him.

    • dux

Ha! I feel bad for that nice 1989 CBR1000 next to him as well.

  • JonB

That made me feel a little better about my day.

  • doublet

What’s even more amusing to me is those don’t appear to be US license plates! I feel like it’s at least expected here.. Outside the US quantifies it as more squidly by scale, eh?

    • Sean Smith

Nah, he’s just the shaved head euro-douche version of a squid.

  • eric

i don’t get the point at all. bouncing off rev limiters is bad mmkay?

    • Sean Smith

Bouncing off the rev limiter hurts your motor and makes you look like a dick. It’s a lose/lose.

  • Rick

    TOOL.

  • NitroPye

    vvVVVROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMM!!!!!

    “DON’T WHAT?!”

  • snowejob

I’ve seen this once before… in front of the shop I used to work at. Even when you explain to people that doing something will have consequences – they just can’t help themselves. He thought it should be covered under warranty all the same.

  • Devin

    Can’t watch.

  • Az

I’m pretty sure that guy was drunk off his ass. A giant fireball engulfs his right arm and he just slowly stumbles back, and then feebly tries to bat at the flames… I’m glad he blew up his bike before going out and doing something even more stupid.

    • http://www.postpixel.com.au mugget

Yeah I reckon he just wanted to kill the bike or something..? Looks like he was expecting it. You know – like those other car guys who just sit an old rotary on the limiter and wait to see how long it takes to blow up. Or even that one guy who got sick of waiting 20 minutes and had to take the oil and/or coolant out to speed things up…

    • Joe

Somehow I get the impression that it was not his bike. He definitely seemed to be doing that on purpose.

  • Gene

Yup. Saw someone do that to a 500 Interceptor waaay back when, until it put a rod & a chunk ‘o piston through the cases and into the guy’s ankle.

Also saw someone stand next to a Harley and do that, until it fired a pushrod through his thigh.

    Karmic justice is a bitch.

    • jeremy

Dude, where do you hang out?

      • robotribe

Yes. Please tell us so we NEVER visit there.

      • Gene

Florida, where all the stupid shit happens that didn’t happen in California.

The Interceptor thing was about 20 years ago at college in Orlando and the Harley thing was 8 years or so ago at Bike Week (of course)

If you recall, it didn’t take much encouragement to make an Interceptor 500 blow up. The 750s were much better built.

  • Kit

My CBR1100XX is still purring like a kitten while approaching 100k miles on the clock and I bounce her off the rev limiter in parking lots all the time…oh wait, no, no I actually never have, maybe that has something to do with it.

  • Jeff

ughh!!! I hate when it turns into a rev off to see who’s louder. If we are in the mountains where the sound isn’t bouncing off of every building/surface, not so bad. But this seemed a bit excessive unless he was having an issue. Would have loved to hear what he told the other owners next to him.

ughh!!! I hate when it turns into a rev off to see who’s louder. If we are dragging knees through the mountains where the sound isn’t bouncing off of every building/surface, not so bad. But this seemed a bit excessive unless he was having an issue. Would have loved to hear what he told the other owners next to him.

      Fixed ;)

  • noone1569

Whoa now wait a minute. I’m not supposed to start the bike up and immediately bounce it off the rev limiter a few times? I mean, there’s no oil flowing yet so it can’t hurt right?

I love, love seeing squids do this shit and wonder why they’re smoking. Makes me :) everytime.

  • Mr.Paynter

Madness! RIP to a wasted scoot!
There should be rules against this sort of abuse!

  • http://twitter.com/metabomber Jesse

Why? For the PEW PEW exhaust flames, of course.

I am sad for the Ninja that had to take this abuse. I hope the neighboring Hurricane survived that doucherocket’s idiocy.

  • austin_2ride

i said warm it up, not blow it up!

    • Ivan

      :-D

  • Barry

Reminds me of the Republic of Texas bike rally. Every year, all you hear is the sound of pirates turning air and fuel into noise, and the occasional squid popping off a zing to re-inflate their members a bit.

It IS a bit odd that he doesn’t seem at ALL surprised that his bike is on fire.

  • runrun

no way! could it be the same squid that was last seen on hfl a few months ago straddling the front wheel of a green ninja backwards as it rocketed into the shrubbery?

it can’t be, can it? though maybe here he was just an apprentice-squid still practicing his craft before graduating summa cum laude and moving on to another, newer green ninja.

    glad that mine’s silver.

    • dux

Good catch! You may be correct…

  • Kevin

What’s with the tailpipe flames, mixture too rich?

    • Sean Smith

Back-fires at first, likely other, more sinister fires later.

  • Sentinel

Only his slow, painful, burning death could have made this any better!
