Happening: 2011 Orange County Traffic Officers Association Motor Rodeo

HFL, Positions -

Nothing is more scary to Southern California bikers than rain, except for a downpour with high winds and temperatures below 65, which is the known end of everything wholesome in the universe. Unless, of course, those bikers are fearless bike cops competing head to head on Huntington Beach in the 2011 OCTOA Motor Rodeo. First rider to drop a foot, knock a cone or miss the on-the-fly route loses and the winner moves to the next round. Perfectly trimmed mustaches? Check. Guns and batons? Double check. Buzz cuts? By the dozen. Incredible low-speed skills? Without a doubt. Blasting the Village People’s YMCA for the champion? Damn right. Click below for the feature.

Pro-tip: When evading a motorcycle mounted police officer, never enter a cone maze.

This is like parkour. I’ll never need it, but damn it’d feel good to do it.

  • DoctorNine

This of course begs the question of BMW or Honda.
I’m betting Honda, but have no rational basis for this.

    • Gene

I wonder how many BMW final drives they go through in a season…

      • RocketSled

Perhaps I’m too mechanically inclined, but what the heck is involved in fixing a BMW rear-end? To look at the forums, people take ‘em out back and shoot em when they start to leak.

        • austin_2ride

As you would any other manufactures. Teardown, perform diagnostics, and replace any needed seals or gaskets. Now if it is ran with no fluid you can have some issues. Some BMW final drive units do not have a part number for the bevel gear or crown gear, complete units are your only option for new parts. Most newer BMW shops will not perform a complete final drive “rebuild”. Due to the time and labor needed you are typically better off with a new or used complete unit.

          • okto

oddly enough, we replace a lot of tires. couple a week. flats, blown sidewalls, etc.

          • RocketSled

I’m finding several mechanical niches where the manufacturer has thrown the baby out with the bath water. The latest example was a power steering pump from Subaru. $800 for the dealer to replace $2.60 worth of o-rings.

I can’t fathom someone not noticing lube leaking out of a motorcycle’s rear-end..I guess I’m a little more observant than that.

BMW final drives are very sensitive to a correct adjustment and shimming of the bearing. Sometimes even the factory doesn’t do a good job. (What can you expect from Berlin school dropouts?)
Rebuilding and properly shimming of the final drive requires certain level of knowledge and experience. Several independent shops have the skills and tools.

No way, the RT is a dream in the slow stuff…lug it and let its low center of gravity do the work ;-)

  • http://rider49er.blogspot.com Mark D

Is that artillery piece mounted to the back of the BMW factory installed?!

    • http://hellforleathermagazine.com Grant Ray

The shotgun? I saw them mounted in a couple of different places. Pretty standard equipment, but the placement is optional.

    • Gregory

I thought a cop’s job was to serve & protect? Does that shotgun do either? Perhaps it’s just the Canadian in me speaking…

      • Tony T.

I saw mounties in Ontario that had H&K MP5′s strapped to the front of their four-wheelers. I’m pretty sure the citizens of Canada are just as dangerous as the ones down South.

  • Scott-jay

Nice pics, seems all at ease in the rain.
Shotguns required defense against hippies in VW micro-buses. See bad movie: “Electra Glide in Blue”.

  • http://greatjoballweek.blogspot.com/ Case

Funny that they held it in HB. Along with Brea it’s famous for being very pro-ticket with the bike compliance. No reflectors? Ticket. Fender eliminator? Ticket. I know that stuff is illegal but it feels as though they treat it like a revenue generating opportunity instead of a safety/crime issue.

@ Grant – I hope you’re still in town. It was shitty this week but supposed to be 80 degrees and sunny on Saturday. 85 on Sunday.

    • http://hellforleathermagazine.com Grant Ray

      Actually, I live here now.

      • nymoto

Man all of HFL left for the wrong coast?? What happened to the NY love? I know they have much larger fakes out there but come on?? Haha
Have fun in the sun boys – it’s about to get cold here.

          4. Breathing in smog breeds success
          5. AWESOME RIDING WEATHER (that Southern California “rain” you see in those pics is as common as KKK rallies in Santa Monica)

I may be exaggerating with one of those, but you get the idea.

            6. Fire roads and OHV trails buried in seemingly endless canyons.
            7. Cops wave and smile at bikers, not mace and kettle.

Coming this Fall to a screen near you: “LA’s Fastest.” More speed. More attitude. More comment wars. Less Skank. HFL Productions in cooperation with no one in particular brings you this gritty story of four ne’er-do-wells who claim to own the roads at night. Just when you thought it was safe to drive to the drugstore for diapers in the middle of the night…

  • KP

Excellent stuff, love this type of feature. Glad to see Grant is still around.

Ditto. I thought to myself, “Cool, one of those photo features that scrolls across the page.”

      • http://twitter.com/metabomber Jesse

I, too, am yet another horizontally scrolling feature fan. Love this stuff.

      • David

yep. more horizontal scrolling features please…

  • stefano

    hey welcome back grant!!

  • jason McCrash

Rain??? That looks like a heavy fog moved in. Drizzle at best. Come ride here with rain, more rain, fog, rain again, deer, rain soaked deer, and 5 months of snow. I used to and still ride in the ‘wet’ out there if it comes down when I’m visiting, but the roads do get greasy as a porn stars ass pre-gangbang out there so I’m just breaking balls.

And for the record, motor cops are just moneymakers, having a 12gauge on a motor is just plain stupid. One of our county sheriffs just had his unmarked broken into and 2 pistols stolen while he was in the mall. No shit. If the guy needs a shotgun he should probably be in a cruiser.

    • Sean Smith

The shotgun is obviously just to make him look more intimidating ;)

      • jason McCrash

it definitely is intimidating and I don’t mean to say that motor cops don’t/can’t/won’t get involved in foot based police work that might need a long gun, but the thing isn’t even protected from the elements and grime that come with being on a bike.
I want to see these guys shoot while riding, like the videos of the Paris Gendarmes training on FJR’s that are on Youtube. Actually, I’ve read that they have some of the hardest motorcycle training out there, on and off road, shoot and move, 2 up shoot and move, etc. Some good vids.It does at least look like it’s a stainless gun. I wonder how hard it is to steal………

        • Sean Smith

For the zombie apocalypse? I imagine it’s pretty easy to just ride off on the bike. Crash bars, good radios and big guns make for a well-equipped survival machine until you get out of town.

          • jason McCrash

Totally forgot about the zombies. Good catch!

  • http://lightsoutknivesout.tumblr.com/ Scott Pargett

Tripps me out seeing all those cops riding barehanded, in the cold rain even.

  • RT Moto

So who was the biggest badass representing?

    • Denzel

It looks like a guy named blumenthal went the distance… cop props to him…

  • zato1414

Where was Grant? Setting up cones?

  • Bronson

That shotgun on the back is bad-fucking-ass! I want one for my KTM suermoto!!

  • http://www.bikeexif.com Chris Hunter

Fantastic shots. Can’t beat a Leica in the hands of someone who knows how to operate one.

  • jason McCrash

And in case you didn’t know, Kawi is back in the Police game. Exoect to see BMW’s go bye-bye due to cost and who can do maintenance repairs under warranty.
This is the place that is contacted to sell the PD Concours in the US.

  • Ken

    A jack-all mounted on a bike?! Sweet.
