Jamie Robinson does the Elsinore Grand Prix
I've wanted to race the Elsinore Grand Prix ever since I watched Steve McQueen and Malcolm Smith blasting on and around the streets of Elsinore, California in the '70s movie On any Sunday. I've wanted to race the Elsinore Grand Prix ever since I watched Steve McQueen and Malcolm Smith blasting on and around the streets of Elsinore, California in the '70s movie On any Sunday. So, when I found out there was a vintage class at this year’s event, I instantly booked myself in and turned up very early in the morning in the Pussy Wagon, complete with my '79 YZ 400, dog and my very pregnant girlfriend.

The full day of racing scheduled meant I was on the start line at 9:30am and racing the brilliant 8-mile race course early in the morning. Soon I was blasting down long bumpy straights, around loads of corners and right past Lake Elsinore as the sun came up above the surrounding hillside. The races to follow were Women, kids, modern stuff plus sidecars and even quads racing. Even a few pros turned up to hopefully win the $5,000 1st cash prize which went to the winner of the 'Harvey Mushman 100 mile' main event.
For me it was just a massive thrill to be blasting around this historic course and scaring myself repeatedly as I took the YZ on another brilliant adventure, it was an epic day of pretending to be Steve McQueen and feeling a part of the Elsinore history while my gorgeous girlfriend patiently timed her contractions and thankfully waited till after the event and our journey home to give birth to our beautiful baby boy, a future motorcyclist.
