No liter bike has what I'd describe as a weak mid-range. Thousand cc inline-fours are fucking good motors, all the differences between them are exceptionally minor.

I always thought that the K5/K6 GSX-R1000 was liked for it's meaty midrange? But everything I hear about the S1000RR seems to say that it's much more peaky?

Anyway - pretty sweet review!

Some people just don't like 1000's, I guess their style suits 600's more. But I'd say that if you feel like you want more than a 600, then it's time to go for a 1000. I had a K5 GSX-R600 and went to a K6 GSX-R1000 - I was smiling everywhere I rode for the entire first week and I didn't even go above 7,000rpm. I did commute on it, but I bought it mainly for track riding. You've gotta ride it fast and be giving it berries to have fun on the street, so yeah if I was only riding on the street I would stick with the 600 or 750.

But yes, you only live once.

I meant 650. Bikes like the SV, Ninja 650 and whatnot are good entrees to the sportsbike thing.

I have a lot of friends that race at Homestead. I have never heard any of them complain about the surface. Haven't had the chance to ride it myself but have been many times.

Advertising works perfectly, they would want the bike with the most HP even if it was a rigid frame with fence posts for forks.

"That BMW, revolutionary as it became, was basically a 2005 GSX-R1000 wearing asymmetric plastics and a bunch of fancy electronics drawn from the company’s expertise in car racing". Think I'm going to have this printed on index cards and hand them out to my (know nothing about bikes but pretend to)friends.

Kind of, but the best teams will also choose a good base bike. Don't discount all those racetrack wins; even though those bikes have had lots of money spent on them, they're still just GSX-Rs with bolt-on parts.
