At just $3,195, both the Cleveland CycleWerks Misfit cafe racer and Heist bobber massively undercut almost every other new motorcycle available. At just 250cc, they’re also smaller than most bikes. Bargain or bogus? We take CCW CEO Scott Colosimo riding in the California desert to find out.

            when I rode down to Daytona on my heist the “tha Widow” i was parked on main street and speaking to this lovely lady she asked me, “why such a little engine?”
            my reply was that my dick was big enough and i had nothing to prove.
            She looked at me and turned to my buddy Pete and said that she was taking me back to her hotel now. it was the best line she had heard.

      Yeah I think so too. It’s a cool-looking, affordable bike you can ride. Full credit to CCW for making it happen. I hope they sell a pile of them. They just need to get the word out and get into the discussions for bikes for new riders, or bikes for riders that aren’t served by HD or Power Ranger Race Replica or Mega XXTreme Flatbiller or whatever. It looks like the cafe crowd might be into it. It doesn’t have as much cred as a cafe’d cb but it’s cheaper and runs better. And cred is bullshit anyway.

        hmmm it looks very tempting for my commute to work. What’s the top speed again?

          The top speed in stock form is about 75 mph, although the engine can probably handle a smaller sprocket. This article (worth another read, I’ve found) lists a few things that can be done to it to raise that top speed to 112 miles per hour.

      My Heist has almost 12000 miles on it and I liked it so much I picked up a Misfit to play with. I like what CCW is doing and the small displacement bikes are blast to ride. as of 2 weeks with my Misfit I have just under 700 miles on it.

      yeah, I was just thinking how much better it looked with a person on it. It looks like you could ride it like a normal motorcycle too, not having to worry about scarping bottom in turns.

        I was really surprised by how well it handled and rode. I mean the Misfit literally ran circles around it, but I never once dragged peg or had anything scary happen. That Victory was completely the opposite, drug out everywhere, the rear brake was a light switch, locking the back tire when you used it and the front brake did nothing. Rode it for like 2 hours and had back pain for days.

          That springer seat looks like a revelation compared to most cruiser seats I’ve seen; it sat level, elevated the rider a good amount, and (guessing on this one) put the rider’s weight onto the part of the ass that people actually sit on.

          Was any of that the case when you rode it?

      Legitimate engineering? Are you kidding me? The Misfit we’re riding around has better quality suspension, better finishes on the mechanical parts and higher-quality components than you’ll find on the vast majority of motorcycles, regardless of price. That they’re able to do that for $3k-ish is an enormous feat.

      You don’t need 16,000rpm and traction control to just enjoy riding a motorcycle. CCW is the antidote to all that over indulgence.

        Is the motor developed in-house, or is it a reverse-engineered marvel? What about the shocks, off the shelf or matched to the bike, with appropriate damping? Yes, I’m being the skeptic here, but I’m also the targeted consumer, and I can’t find much information about these machines.

          It’s a Honda motor that’s been pretty thoroughly re-engineered for this specific application. The shocks are bespoke and have really, really good damping. Much better than you’d find on, say, a Suzuki Gladius or Ninja 650. I’m sure Scott will be along shortly to answer more thoroughly, try and place nice rather than be an asshole.

              The engine looks and sounds (from description, not the exhaust note) like a derivative of the Honda CG architecture. Back in the Seventies, Honda’s CB singles had a number of engineering issues that limited their longevity under low-maintenance conditions, such as oil starvation of the camshaft bearings. Honda designed an OHV variant called the CG125 specifically to address these issues and make the engine more suitable for owners sans the means and drive to perform frequent maintenance.

              The CGs didn’t rev as high or make quite as much power as the CBs they were derived from, but the redline and power ratings weren’t all that much lower; the longer service intervals and overall robustness of the new engine were considered worth it, and Asian markets seemed to agree. If I’m right, then it’s an excellent place to start with when building a small motorcycle.

                  Hey, I was right! Neato. Good to see that the counterbalancer Honda omitted from their designs has been added; every CG-style engine I’ve ever ridden all but demanded one.

                  The engine may be manufactured in China, but I’ve only had good experiences with Lifan. We have a few Lifan engines serving this or that role in our family fleet and they’ve never failed to meet our realistic expectations of them.

        … but if she has not commuted previously, how does she know what she needs?

        In my opinion, the Misfit would be a sufficient commuter with the addition of a big courier bag, backpack or top case. I get by with just a ‘Stitch parcel bag on my Griso. I used to think I needed a bunch of luggage but that has not been the case. I carry my lunch, shoes, laptop and “misc stuff” to work and then stuff my overpants, jacket, gloves, and boots into my bag before commencing the astronaut walk, with my helmet, from the parking garage to my building. Seems to work out fine but girls carry more stuff; she may want a top case.

        Depending on geographic location, she may want get some hand grip heaters but other than that I dont see what drawbacks there are with the Misfit. I guess if she spends lots of time on the highway a 250 would get buzzy, but for urban commuting it should be a good fit.

          To answer the first question: because she drives and every route to work that takes a reasonable amount of time has a speed averaging 75-80 miles per hour. It’s the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex: a maze of highways and high speeds. A bike that doesn’t have the ability to go faster than that eliminates an important maneuvering option.

          That’s why she’s on the fence about ANY 250. She loves the CCW aesthetic, though.

            I used to ride a Ninja 250 on that type of commute and speed was never a problem. Getting blown around wasn’t fun though

            A maze of highways, high speeds, and you forgot to mention the ubiquitous “road destruction.”

            Dad calls it “road destruction” because nothing ever seems to be completed although the Highway department has been working on the D/FW area for close to 20 years now. (Closer to 60 years now, if family stories can be believed.)

            Hey! At least she isn’t contemplating commuting to work in Houston on a 250!

        …fitted with a 500cc air-cooled thumper, I suspect the Misfit and the upcoming Ace would be killing Royal Enfield, running neck-in-neck with the V7, and nipping at the heels of the Bonneville/Thruxton. If they could build a 500cc Air-cooled single option and still manage to keep the price around $4k, CCW would become a serious contender overnight.

                i’ll take your word since i haven’t ridden the ccw. esp since the ccw suspension is very believably better than the savage, even with ryca mods. but with a couple of easy, low-cost mods vs. the ryca specs (18″ front wheel, fork brace, chain conversion) i’d bet it’s not such a close comparison.

                just wondering, but in your opinion is that “seat of the pants just-as-fast”, or “as-tested just-as-fast”? btw, i’ll be the first to admit that in my head and heart, feel usually trumps the stopwatch… and that i can’t stand the idea of a 250 being fast as as my 650 :-)

                  comparing the upgraded misfit to the stock ryca i rode, it is just as fast by both measures. faster if the road isn’t straight and pavement isnt perfectly maintained.

    Misfit would have been awesome to have in college. Im rooting for these guys. My interest is probably beyond this bike now but about 10 years ago it would have been a different story. Sure beats a Honda Rebel or a scooter.

        Like my iPad, CCW was designed, engineered and financed in North America… specifically, in the US’s MidWest… Ohio, I think.

        Design, engineering and financing are what’s important; you want those things done by trained, licensed, globally-aware professionals… which we normally get in Aus, Can, UK, US… perhaps Kiwiland, too.

          Well, all other things being equal I’d still rather have them built in the United States. At the very least they’d be one less product that didn’t require ungodly amounts of massively harmful bunker oil to ship across the Pacific. I don’t see why the Chinese can’t build a good product given decent quality control though, and having them built in the Middle Kingdom isn’t a deal-breaker for me.

    Poking around their dealer locator shows a high proportion of scooter shops. Interesting approach, but maybe a double-edged sword if one assumes many (most?) scooter buyers are intimidated by motorcycles which is perhaps why they’re in a scooter shop in the first place.

    OTOH maybe someone coming in for a scooter sees one of these and gets converted?

    One question though. Am I alone in having had the impression these are made in the USA after watching the show? (guess not, given PenguinScotty’s post above…)

    Why isn’t it mentioned that this bike is made in China? Did I miss it with all the talk about the American Dream?

      I know we openly talked about China a lot. Scott even mentioned all the various Harley parts he saw being made at the same factories he uses, but it just didn’t make the cut. Frankly, we’ve discussed it so much I didn’t even notice, and I try to let the editor make the call on what feels best for content flow.

        Content flow – hype – misinformation – sales pitch. Say what you want but knowing more about this bike from your previous coverage, this left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Next time you want to start an American company, start an American company. Not an importer.

        “This is America, nothing is impossible.” Prove it. Make the next bike in the US. Reinvest profit into tooling – labor costs mean less with automation.

          Do you know what it costs to retool a factory in America? Anywhere from $500k to a $1M. Know what it costs in China? As low as a couple thousand. Being an American company doesn’t necessarily mean that everything has to be produced here. If it was inexpensive enough with automation everyone would do it.

          Oh please – give the guy a chance. It’s a start-up. He’s made it clear that his goal is to do more manufacturing in the US as he is able. Do you complain as much about Brembo, Marchesini and Ohlins as you do about LeFan? He can only use the suppliers he has available. Who is currently building small motor bike engines in the US? You expect him to ramp up production of an engine factory before selling anything? Can we at least be logical?

          I seem to remember reading some of the early HFL interviews with Scott where he said that he wanted to build the bike in the U.S. but was turned away by everyone.

          Quite an accusation to make considering the CCW guys have put up pictures from their Chinese factory on this very site. It’s easy to sit behind a keyboard and play armchair industrialist, getting out there and doing it in your 20s is on a whole different level.

            Sure. And it’s not an argument I was making when the other four pieces of news/promotion came out from this site. Those were pretty well balanced and gave the whole backstory, which I respect.
            What I have a grievance with is that this is a new YouTube show with a small link to this site, whose articles are off-limits to non-subscribers. And in that new YouTube show, there is a clear and direct statement that these bikes are made in the US by an American company. A statement which is a clear fabrication without the backstory.
            I still like Mr. Colosimo’s motorcycles, and wish him the best of luck, but if you can’t stand up to your editor to make a fair piece, I’m gonna whine about it.

              David, your argument is based on false information. Scott never said the bikes are made in the US at a US factory. There was no “clear and direct statement that these bikes are made in the US by an American company.” The clear fabrication is, in fact, yours.

              At 04:40, he stated “For me, as an American company, trying to become [Harley-Davidson], it has no value.”

              At 07:43 he states, “The US was built on people dreaming, and that’s lost. Y’know? It’s lost. Especially when I have 98% of the people I’m telling I’m gonna start a motorcycle company, 98% of those people telling me ‘it’s impossible.’ This is America. Nothing is impossible. Really. Nothing is impossible. It took me getting fired from a comfortable job to have the balls to do this.”

              That’s it. Now, please stop spreading misinformation and go wash that sand out of your lady parts.

                Where does he say it’s not made in America? That’s my issue. Sorry if I said direct when I meant incredibly strongly implied statement. Watching this knowing nothing about the company from your previous coverage – that’s the conclusion I would’ve made. That’s all I’m saying. Five words more would’ve been all I’m asking for: “American design made in China” – too bad that didn’t make the cut.

                Lack of information and a strong repetitive message of America US America is also misinformation if it doesn’t include the part about China. Completeness is all I ask. I’m done. Vajajay rinsed.

              Based on your definition of an American company, what companies do you consider American?

              This is like when people always claim Ford and GM as American companies despite the fact that they build their cars in Canada and Mexico. If they are American companies because the people who run it are American, then CCW is American.

      Yes the bike is made in China to spec for CCW. But the specs are designed here in the US, and I’m sure there’s a robust Quality Assurance system in place.

      Unfortunately, the product liability hazards associated with manufacturing motorcycle parts makes such operations very expensive to insure. This can make sense for a supplier when they’re manufacturing parts for a production run of thousands of bikes a month. But to supply for a small startup that’s making maybe dozens of bikes a month, the risks and/or insurance costs likely don’t make financial sense.

      It would require a real commitment, but CCW could have a long term strategy to build their bikes in China only until their market share grows enough to warrant domestic production, at which point they could move production back to the US.

      So we’ve got an American entrepreneur with the vision and drive to create a new motorcycle company. He has pushed past the bureaucratic inertia created by lawyers and insurance companies, and today the bikes he’s designed are available to buy at dealers across the country.. Why shouldn’t he be talking about the American Dream?

      Yanks are already brilliant at what we do: medicine, finance, music, design, movies, TV shows, military hardware, space-age stuff and most high tech stuff. We do what we do well quite well. What we don’t do well is weld, bolt, tighten or adjust.

      Why do you care where something is bent, bolted and built? The companies that created your product are already represented in your 401(k) and represented in this imaginary community called “the US”. We already help out our neighbours and our fellow Americans.

      Do the wheels roll better if the bolt was tightened on the banks of the Ohio as opposed to on the banks of the Pearl?

    Loved the episode guys. My only gripe is the sound leveling. I had to crank my volume to hear the speech (yes I know you were in a public place) and then quickly turn it down for any of the music bits. Otherwise it was a great episode. These things are keeping me going while im recovering from my accident

    So, I could leave another comment about how I’m glad you are giving the CCW guys coverage, or how I’m Impressed by the small but perfectly formed chopper for under 5k, or how the editing is a bit choppy.
    But, I think you are nailing it with the RideApart because I can imagine hanging out and shooting the shit along with you. Watching the video feels like hanging out after a good ride.

    This is the first RideApart that I’ve watched. Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed it and I’m very impressed. But I’m far more impressed with CCW and their bikes. Seeing them in action like this, and hearing Scott’s passion get’s me really excited about what they’re doing. I may seriously consider the Misfit as a second bike/daily rider next year.

      agreed completely. i was skeptical about the bikes at first but after spending the day with the guy, i really grew a sense of repsect for him and his product. i wish this episode could have been an hour or so longer of just interview stuff. i’ve already convinced two people to buy a misfit since the day this was shot.

    Watching this video makes me want to go out and buy a CCW just to support the guy. I really appreciate that Scott has the vision, desire, and execution skills to pull off what he’s done — but deep down, he seems to be a regular guy just like most of us. And I think the video and its production values make this clear. Great job guys!

    Also, before seeing these two episodes, I used to think that Wes was the pretty boy — what with all the poking and jesting he gets around here (some self-fueled). But it’s obvious now that Grant is actually the pretty boy; he’s just more careful with his words.

    It’s interesting comparing CCW to Motus. Both are American start-ups. But each decided on a different clientele. It also shows what a finished product would cost if designed and built in the U.S. from scratch vs. designed in the U.S. from an already existing bike and built in China. No way Scott’s clientele could have been served unless he did the way he did. Nice job!

    Love them both and love seeing them ride the same roads I do all the time here in SoCal. Are these bikes CA ready or just 49 state? I would love to have one for pissing around the freeways and such.

    We all talk a lot of trash about how great CCW is and how we like them and we’re excited for them etc.

    Here’s a question has a single solitary HFL reader bought one? “Convincing my friend to consider…” “The girl friend needs a first bike when she takes the MSF” “I could see adding this to my stable” etc. don’t count.

    Has anyone here actually bought one?

      see my comment above under hammsammich’s post. i’m taking one of my super close friends to a dealership after our camping trip this weekend. one of my friend’s getting one just wants to ride around LA and the other lives in Oakland and rides all around the bay area.

      i dont think anyone is saying this is the best bike for every rider. most of us do a lot more than around town and tiny stints on the highway and we need to own bikes that fit our riding styles. their are lots of bikes on here that get positive reviews that wouldnt be the right bike for some of us or some of you.

      if youre looking in the 3k cafe market (which means shitty old hondas like the one i am trying to sell because it has been such a headache) or for something small and new that looks nice and has accessible parts and service, this is a way better option built by a neat company run by a really intelligent guy.

        I like CCW too but the sad fact of the matter is I would never buy one. I just think it’s interesting that we all blow smoke up scott’s rear but no one here, as far as I can tell, has yet put their money where their mouth is. Promises on the internet to buy a bike CCW doesn’t produce (“give me a 500 and im there”) doesn’t exactly help them get to the point where they can produce said bike. It’s possible that we’re in love with the idea of CCW much more than the reality of it.

        And like I said, recommending them doesn’t count at least until the sale is final.

          I agree that saying “if they made a __ I would buy it” doesn’t mean shit. And sure, recommending a bike doesn’t mean anything financially until it’s sold. But I wouldn’t recommend or push a buddy who I am going to be hanging out with and riding with towards a bike ifi didn’t think it was a great product for him. If we all have one common trait it’s our hatred of being wrong and none of us would risk recommending something to someone close to us if we thought there was a change get wouldn’t like it and therefor lose their trust in us as advisors.

          It’s foolish to call that blowing smoke up Scott’s ass and I promise you he isn’t surprised we haven’t made a purchase. It is no knock on his product. It is a great tool for certain jobs just like every other motorcycle is.

          Part of it also probably has to do with the fact that, if you’re commenting on this site, you already have a bike, and enough miles/experience under your belt that you’re out of the 250 market. But we’ve all got friends.

      Bear in mind that CCW is a brand new, very small company. The Misfit has only just gone one sale. Not many people anywhere have bought a CCW yet and those that have are going to be heavily biased towards novice riders. That’ll change as their presence and product lineup expands.

        Actually isn’t CCW pretty popular outside of the US? I follow CCW’s blog because Im the same kind of hypocrite I am pointing out… I was under the impression that tha Heist and tha Misfit had been available for awhile and it was tha Ace that was still in some kind of authorization state for sale in the US. tha Hooligun seems to have fallen of the map.

          I don’t see it as being a hypocrite. I really don’t think the average HFL reader (motorcycle enthusiast) is the market for this bike, by design. EVERY manufacturer is going after us; no one is going after everyone else. I think Scott is looking blue ocean, rightfully so, and not for a slice of the shrinking and aging enthusiast market. We may be the coaches that help the sale, but ultimately, I believe, these bikes will enter the hands of new riders, young riders.

            Hooligun was redesigned using a new motor: OHC, liquid cooled 4 valve motor, trellis frame and completely re-worked body. Release will be soon enough.

    And after seeing that vid, I really want a Heist! Don’t need the misfit, as I already have a Thruxton.

    Cool video! We are really happy to see people dig what we are up to at CCW. In general, we sell about 2/3 of our volume outside the USA, the US market is a developing market for smaller displacement. We really love reading the comment section on HFL, some relatively good insight, seems like the pay barrier actually attracts some quality readers.

    I have a CCW tha Heist and it has close to 12000 miles on it, all done in a year. I road this bike from outside NYC down to Daytona FL and back. It was a 3000 mile round trip in 10 days, 2400 of that was the ride down and back. 
    When i first came across the CCW brand i was impressed with the build and the style. I fully believe that the tha Heist is a canvas waiting for an artist and art is what I created with my Heist.

    They are close enough to Toronto, I might take a tour down and check it out.

    Won’t happen for me this year, but next year I’m pretty much sold, I was thinking about the CB250, but this is much, much cooler.

    Now I just need to figure out how to get one in Alberta.

    I’d like to see a comparison between the misfit and the TU250X. Similar specs, slightly more expensive probably due to fuel injections. I rode a TU once and though it would be perfect if it was a 500… otherwise a fantastic motorcycle.
