Tapas, electric motorcycles, MotoGP and Drake McElroy in Barcelona

In this installment of Drake’s Passage, the professional motorcycle dude visits Barcelona, takes his wife out for dinner, rides his first electric motorcycle, spouts some nonsense about battery pollution, then visits Toby Moody and Julian Ryder at Catalunya. Damn, Drake gets to do some fun stuff.

Kinda like my trip to Barcelona, except with nicer restaurants and MotoGP instead of the beach (with annoying peddlers not giving you 5 minutes of peace).

Oh, guys don’t do this to me. I miss home!

Drake brings up an interesting point about wasted batteries I didn’t see tackled in any of the electric discussion lately.

      They’re recycled.

Theoretically a healthy but degraded battery could be reused for other purposes, residential solar storage / UPS or grid-level energy storage.

I’m curious to see how this works in practice; you’d need a lot of smart logic to keep a heterogenous sea of batteries alive.

A dead lithium battery can be recycled. My understanding is that the battery is ground up, mechanically separated, and the metals, plastics, and electrolyte salts are reused.

Toxco (unfortunate name, that) has been recycling batteries since 1984 and recycling lithium batteries since 1992. They got a DOE grant to develop the lithium recycling in 2009.

Yeah good point, you’ve gotta wonder…

Fair enough if they can be used for other less demanding purposes, but even then – they’re not going to last forever. And then…?

I can’t imagine battery recycling being any more environmentally friendly than paper recycling for example. Last I heard there are some pretty nasty by-products from paper recycling.

Yea i think he meant when the batteries are trash after like 5 years or whatever their life cycle is.
and the lithium battery production line is far from a desirable setup, and full of wasted petroleum shipping products around the world.

I really enjoy watching this series. Drake seems like such a down-to-earth guy, despite his superhuman riding skills and world-travels.

That Volta electric — POC Sports would have the perfect helmet for it, if they made MC helmets in addition to their bike/snow helmets.

I have fond memories of Barcelona. I had an ex-GF who lived there, and I loved flying there for quick visits when I used to work in Amsterdam. Like many tourist-trap cities, it really is a different place when you’ve got a local showing you around.

I also have visceral memories of the Monasterio. Many of the bands I worked with played there (it’s a regular stop for American indie bands on tour), and I spent a few late nights there — or more like early mornings, because the music would start after midnight. And back then, clove cigarettes were really popular, so walking down that staircase would lead to an instant headache. And after the show, before shower and bed, rubbing my finger across my cheek would leave my fingertip black with soot. My head hurts right now remembering all this.

Man I didn’t needed to be reminded of Simoncelli. =( RIP 58

I figured these would be newer
