RideApart 11: Hell On Wheels Moto Rally

Dailies, TV -

By

jamie

From ratty old motorbikes built out of swap meet parts to well polished classic beauties, there’s a racing class for it in the Annual Hell On Wheels Moto Rally. Ever keen to have a go on anything with two wheels and an engine, Jamie Robinson shows up with nothing and manages to snag a go on a vintage 70′s Yamaha, lining up on the grid for a day of dirty action.

Jamie sent that bike to motorcycle Valhalla. Brilliant. Fucking flying.

Based on the Flat Track episode of Ride Apart I was flapping my gums to a friend and now I got roped into a vintage bike swap-meet and race in the early fall with them. If it is anywhere close to this and if I have half as much fun as Jamie I will consider myself a winner. A little nervous because I’ve never gone off road on purpose before, but now I am fucking sold.

Jamie mid race with mud on his face = Two year old with chocolate cake all over their face.

  • Campisi

Goddamn, talk about stars burning twice as bright. He got three races worth of awesome out of that thing before it gave up the ghost on him.

    Hipsters.

Now that’s out of the way … This was awesome! I’m really inspired to get my clapped out DT125 running!

By far the best RideApart yet. Nice work Grant.

Thanks, but a lot of that credit belongs to Jamie and Nik. They work their asses off.

  • Scott-jay

Jamie kinda tears a hole in ATGATT, thank-goodness.

  • Tommy

Oh man, so awesome. So rad watching jamie just hop on a bike and crush like that.

+1 to that. It was fucking awesome. That guy is no joke.

Damn Jamie, almost looks like he might have some sort of brass balls race background.

  • The Blue Rider

Fookin’ ‘ell Jamie. Turn and burn!

Goddamn you guys make California look awesome. I want to go find a beater bike and do crazy fun bike-hippie shit now.

  • Jericho7

Crushed it! Great episode guys! Now I have to actually read the article and find out when the next one is!

I have been trying to get some friends to enter already existing events, like this one, on cheap crappy bikes. But working on my cheap crappy 24 hours of Lemons race car has been eating up too much time and money. Glad to see someone from HfL made it to the HoW event.

If you want to race old dirt bike CALVMX has a race just about every month somewhere between San Diego and Los Angeles. Sure you are going to get beat by a 60 year old guy with $5000 in his Yamaha DT1, but that doesn’t make it any less fun.

I’ve got my sights set on the Elsinore GP in November? and then Catalina again in December. Elsinore is a blast no matter what you ride, but don’t be like me and go all the way to Catalina and not finish 1 lap because of mechanical issues. My first Elsinore race was on a CL450 in 1999 with DOT semi knobbies, in fact that was my first race ever.

Cool vid, nice work Jamie and Nik!

    “It’s explosions between your legs… I mean, that’s where your genitals are…”

Hell yeah, explosions between your legs!

    • Johndo

The flag girl also might have something to do with that lol!

Holy shit that was a great episode. So much fun. Thanks guys!

  • Miles Prower [690 Duke, MTS 1200]

So much awesome. I liked how the story mirrored the race. Simple concept with very little pretense leading to big smiles all around.

Cool episode. And how awesome is that guy just lending his spare bike like that?

  • zipp4

That was fun! Oh and thanks for proving once again that I live in the wrong state.

  • Bronson

    The interviews were awesome.

  • Wolfgang Romero

All of this RideApart material is Network worthy IMHO, at least is what I’d like to see on TV

  • stink

  • Sean Thomson

This is the sort of thing that would get me watching TV again. Keep up the great work, I always look forward to watching RideApart.

  • JC

Great episode…I smiled the whole time. That’s what riding is all about.

  • nymoto

Great job guys – fucking rad.

  • Dean

+1 to all the praise here.

The initial episode started out a bit less focused than I like. But this one, along with the CCW ep and the more recent “get a small bike in the city” ep have all been passed along to many of my friends.

Keep turning out the good shit!

  • Fizzy Fox

    Fuck yes.

  • http://www.firstgenerationmotors.blogspot.com Emmet

Jamie’s a cool guy. keep him up front every show!

    “Explosions between your legs.” LOL
Wasn’t that the other choice for this site before you guys went with Hell For Leather?

  • stackhousehouse

Gotta add another +1. These are getting so much better. Jamie is right at home on camera isn’t he. Really looking forward to more!
