“Viva chopper speedway kid, viva chopper speedway,” narrates the legendary Dan Walsh in this mini-documentary on the Dirt Quake flat track races. Put on by Sideburn Magazine, the event brought together a rag tag crew of professional racers, inappropriate street bikes, Dunhill creative directors, fashion photographers and at least one guy on a Royal Enfield in pink Fieldsheer “Worm” leathers. Despite the rain and despite the mud, this looks like a fucking blast.

I saw that and thought, wasn’t Dimitri Coste the same guy that ran the Catalina race in period correct bike and matching leathers? Yes. Yes he was.

    Nice job done by all.

“Inappropriate Road Bikes” is my favorite category of any event.

This was great! I feel compelled to ride to the fair grounds and kick down the gate to the horse track and take the suzuki around for a couple of hot laps!

I’m torn… not sure whether “inappropriate road bikes” or “f-yeah, choppers” is the best class ever!

    Excellent!

Watch out, I may enter the next Aussie event.

BSA, AJS, Norton, Matchless, Velocete, Vincent, Airel, Greeves, Brough, Scott, Rudge, James and many more may now be extinct or a mere shadow of their former selves. The british markets primacy and influence long gone and our racers no longer dominate completely like they once did, but by god scratch a little and the spirit that drove it all still exists!

My motorcycling consanguinity goes back directly to my grandfather riding WWII eighth army WD department bikes in ad-hoc North African war zone speedway competitions whilst on r&r from his job as a dispatch rider.

Well done Garry what a great effort! Wish we’d been there but we we’re doing our bit to keep the home fires burning. We’ll be at the next one!
