A new documentary coming to English television screens promises to tell the inside story of World Superbike’s heyday — the 1990s. Carl Fogarty, James Witham, Neil Hodgson and Julian Ryder will relive the decade, telling behind the scenes stories interspersed with classic racing footage and all set, appropriately, to a soundtrack by bands like Blur, Oasis and Ocean Colour Scene.

“I wanted to create a snapshot of what racing life in the nineties was all about,” says producer and writer Dave Moore. “It isn’t meant to be a warts and all account, but more of a nostalgic journey through one of Britain’s finest and most thrilling decades in racing history.”

“The 1990s saw World Superbikes become, without doubt, one of the most popular sports in the UK. The British round of the series would regularly see more than a hundred thousand people pack the Brands Hatch race track to cheer on British racing stars such as four-time champion Carl Fogarty; the biggest crowd attendance of any sporting event in the British Isles.”

“Superbikes! When Britain Ruled the World” will air on ITV4 at 7pm on July 4. Hopefully it’ll be distributed to other countries soon after. On a personal note, it’s this decade and this racing that got me interested in this whole motorcycle thing in the first place, so I’m excited for this one.

It is this decade, those bikes, and those lunatic British magazines that got me into motorcycles, and indirectly my career.

I miss the SBK of old.

I used to watch foggy dominate. It put the 916 on such a pedistal in my child brain that I still lust after one

Totally rad. The ’90s was my coming of age with motorcycles, and WSBK really shoved me along. God, it was a good decade.

    This looks pretty awesome.

WSB, BSB, Collin Schiller at fast bikes. Ronnie Smith and Gus Scott at PB. ‘pig baitiing’ an article in PB about goading the police into chase. Motorcycling in the 90′s in Britian was irresistible to a spotty youth on an RD125lc.

Thank you HFL, I knew nothing about this till right now! I have been buying Bike magazine since 1996, have a ’98 Duc Monster and a ’98 Ducati 748 signed by Foggy himself…. As far as biking is concerned I’m stuck in that decade!

Boy, am I excited about seeing this on TV.
