RideApart 12 – The Born Free 4 show

Dailies, TV -

Choppers, bobbers, rat-bikes, vintage cafe racers and every kind of wild oddity in between, nobody does American custom hot-rod culture for bikes on the West Coast like the annual Born Free show in Irvine, Ca. Our man Jamie Robinson wades into a sea of black leather, denim, burly beards, Daisy Dukes and thousands of motorcycles to see what it’s all about.

  • Harten Bane

fantastic work. I love how nearly everyone you interviewed offered to start their bike.
    “Wanna hear it?”

    • jp182

i love the sense of community about that as well.

  • rohorn

Looks like “Cooks Corner” x1000 from 30+ years ago…

  • RagdollOp

Good episode! Just felt a little claustrophobic to me. Needs some nice wide shots of the bikes.

Looks like a great event! I would love to see it live one year!

    • aziai79

I thought the exact same thing…kept wanting to see full shots of the profiled bikes, but no luck. Great episode otherwise.

      • Scott-jay

        Yep, especially the diesel.

    • RWerksman

      +1. Good episode overall!

YEAH! I got so upset not being able to see the bikes you guys talked about..
awesome episode, but i feel unsatisfied.

    • ike6116

      Seriously who shot this?

      • http://hellforleathermagazine.com Grant Ray

Sorry about that, and I was just as frustrated. I was informed during the editing process that the available wide-angle lens apparently failed sometime at the beginning of the shoot.

        • http://www.damiengaudet.blogspot.com damien

          Whew…at least it wasn’t intentional!

They should have stuck in a wide photo at least. To hear the description and then not get a full look…damn.

        • Fizzy Fox

Meh. Shit happens. Great episode. Those were some awesome builds. Thanks for sharing!

  • whoisthor

    Nice work dudes

  • R__M

What’s the best way to find out about events like this, and the mx one from last episode, before they happen? Forums? Dive bars?

    • Tim N.

A number of Facebook pages have been posting fliers for Born Free for a few weeks. I specifically remember Biltwell, RSD, and maybe Lowbrow Customs. If you have a Fb page, just start liking every bike page you can find. Then, if you’re not particularly into voyeurism, your news feed turns into bike porn! I particularly suggest Bike Exif and Roland Sands Design.

      • R__M

        Makes sense. Thanks much

      • jp182

any of these on the east coast??

        • http://hellforleathermagazine.com Wes Siler

Brooklyn Invitational is this coming weekend I believe.

We try to promote them on HFL, but organizers of these things are so obtuse that we often don’t find out till it’s last minute.

Event Organizers: If you organize an event like Born Free, and it’s a good event, we will promote it on HFL. Just email us. Sheesh.

          • http://hellforleathermagazine.com Grant Ray

The Invitational is always in the Fall. The date this year is September 22nd.

  • Scott-jay

    Whole new level.
Jamie (new daddy) gets a raise.

  • Campisi

Eight bucks for concession fare sounds about right, but at least it’s something more substantial than Costco franks on a stale bun.

Saw a decent amount of two great things that go great together: board-track bikes and patina.

  • jp182

i usually don’t like cruisers but that lady on the green bike where she’s all up in the tank (around 11:58) is my kinda bike!!!

  • dux [87 CBR600, 95 XR600R]

Heh, cruisers make plenty more sense when they’re parked. Looks like fun times.

  • nymoto

I am going next year! NY to Born Free sounds like a good trip to me. Great episode guys.

    • http://hellforleathermagazine.com Wes Siler

Gotta do that ride on a chopper. Just making sure we’re on the same page.

      • JVictor75

Wait, what? Wes is looking forward to riding a chopper?

Who are you? And what have you done with the real Wes Siler?

        (I keed, I keed)

        • nymoto

Im am in! (fuck now i need a chopper? really? ok fine. haha)

Scott can I borrow a Heist for the ride? Please?

        • NewOldSchool

There is a discernible difference between something real, substantial and original, and something manufactured and sold in the image of the original.

Most guys I know into vintage bikes wouldn’t be caught dead on a modern Harley, Triumph, etc.

          • JVictor75

            Oh, totally agreed.

I was just attempting to give Wes a little bit of shit is all.

I suspect that I would thoroughly enjoy walking around a show like that, probably grinning from ear to ear.

I know I like talking to people with lovingly maintained daily driver hotrods/vintage cars instead of the trailer queens that everyone else seems to flock to.

I got the same sense from these guys.

          • Jake

Funny, most of the guys I know with vintage Brits own modern triumphs too, myself included. What else are you supposed to do when your Norton is pissing oil, walk? Still wouldn’t be caught dead on a Harley.

      • Campisi

        “F*ck yeah, choppers.”

  • stefano

great detail / pickup shots but without the establishing wide shot the viewer is left in a panic. i know the photographer sees the interesting details but we need to be given the whole picture first before we can appreciate them!

  • Brad

The Rhinebeck Grand National in upstate NY is a great show. Takes place in the spring.

  • 10/10ths

    Very well done.

For those of you in Texas, the Harvest Classic each October in Luckenbach, Texas is awesome. Same flavor as this video.

Here’s a link to their web page:

I rode my Ducati Monster there last year and it was incredible.
