Felix Baumgartner can get his knee down

Dailies, Galleries, Import -

When Felix Baumgartner isn’t skydiving from space, you can find him riding his KTM 990 Superduke R. “The best way to move on land,” the dare devil writes on his blog. And Felix doesn’t just toodle about, riding in a custom Alpinestars suit, he shows himself pulling wheelies and dragging knee like a pro.

Felix’s numberplate reads “A” for Austria, “S” for his native Salzburg, then “Air3″ for, well, jumping from space and shit. When he’s not riding, Felix drives a Ford GT with the numberplate, “Air1.”

It’s official, they convinced me to buy a Red Bull.

    • isambard

He could wheelie on the moon and Red Bull would still taste like ass.

I agree with both of you

when they mentioned he was Austrian I couldn’t help wondering if he rode a KTM. Check.

    • AHA

Mad? Check. Austrian? Check. KTM? Natürlich.

Keepin it tight with the homeland on the KTM.

  • Kevin

    Form could use some work.

I’m no expert, but for an upright bike with high bars, that looks about right to me.

      • Kevin

He’s crossed up. He needs to move his head out from the bike closer to the mirror and drop his shoulder. It’s really common and usually a bad habit picked up from the street because you’re always trying to peak around the turn. Better form with handle bars

Eh, body position isn’t the be all and end all of riding a motorcycle competently. First, the guy in that link is seriously tiny, so he’s got plenty of room to move around. Felix is a bigger dude, so the tighter proportions on the bike (less room for legs, less room for torso, less room for arms) make contorting your torso down to parallel pretty hard. Doubly so with tall bars.

It also just comes down to what era you learned to ride in. If it was 1990s or before, hanging off like this is what racers did and what schools taught. It’s how I learned and it’s taking a lot of unlearning to achieve a more modern style.

Staying a little more upright can also help with vision and transitioning quickly from one side to the other.

While he could probably take a little more lean out and therefore achieve a little more outright speed through that corner with modern BP, Felix doesn’t appear to be having much trouble riding that bike. He’s on the road, having fun and dragging knee, not trying to break lap records on a track.

          • Kevin

Some valid points. Just saying that “dragging knee like a pro” might be a bit of hyperbole.

                A. Internet fail. B. Hasn’t raced for 10+ years. C. Adopted modern BP in the later part of his career D. Sorry I undermined the infallibilityidol worshiping foundation of the red bull marketing machine. Keep calm and carry on.

                • PenguinScotty

So you are saying that racers from 10= years ago were not pros?

What does undermining Red Bull have anything to do with what was talked about before?

              • Holden and Annette

Oh, now those Germans are accusing you of being a traffic thief by linking to a .jpg.

            “Doubly so with tall bars.”

I first read that as “…with tall balls.”

If he’s going to be an all-round bad ass at least he should have some aggressive form on a bike!

    • paulo

any pointers on his jump from space ? anything he could have done better… ;)

      • Kevin

do it on a KTM next time?

        • The Blue Rider

Never mind shitty energy drinks. This sounds like a job for Icon!

  • Coreyvwc

I guess I was the only one seriously unimpressed the “space jump” thing. Just simple physics (gravity) at play, and it was already done 50 years ago… Ah well, he likes motorcycles so I guess he’s cool by me.

  • Ben

people did lots of shit 50 years ago, and did them all like a boss. Now we fuck up repeats of those things all the time even with our modern technology.

  • fred vg

He’s on a public road and there’s a ‘guilotine’ crash barrier. Maybe he’s not trying to go as fast as possible, maybe he drags his elbow when he’s on a track. Maybe… but he’s definitely more badass than most of us.
