“Marquez is very, very special,” writes reader Robin. “His daring passes after fluffing the start at Motegi needs to be seen to be believed. This is similar to that infamous clip of Schwantz at Hockenheim.”

“”I made a huge mistake on the start —it was a rookie mistake,” stated Marquez in the post-race press conference. “When I engaged first gear I noticed something strange, but at that moment I was only focusing on the lights and on making a good start. I didn’t think to check that the gear had slotted in correctly. When the lights went out I found I was still in neutral and the first thing to cross my mind was to hope that nobody hit me from behind. I wasn’t just because I didn’t want to miss the race, but rather that the other rider and myself could have been very badly hurt.”

“I had a lot of luck in that respect, but on the opening corner I was very far back and had to give 100% on the early laps. When I saw that I wasn’t with the lead group, my aim was to take as many points as possible. However, I surprised myself with how I moved up places and reached the frontrunners. From then on, I took things much more calmly when it came to overtaking.”

I wonder how well he’ll adjust to the big bike next year. Should be interesting.

  • zero

    Dat shit cray.

    • nymoto

      Agreed ! Holy amaze

      • http://twitter.com/metabomber Jesse

It is like all he knows how to do is pass people. Ridiculous!

  • David Howland

    Incredible!

I always try to hold true to “You can’t win the race in the first lap, but you can lose it.” but epic opening laps are some of my all-time favorite racing moments!

  • Andres Freire

That was amazing, if only motogp was even remotely this interesting. Oh well, WSBK is where it’s at anyways.

  • Coreyvwc

Cannot wait to see this kid bring SOME excitement back to GP next year.

  • Patrick from Astoria

Someone explain to me why motorcycle racing isn’t the most popular spectator sport on television, never mind usually being remaindered to some forgotten cable channel way up in the triple digits on most packages if it’s broadcast at all.

That’s just amazing. He’s in a different world from everyone else.

    • Skank NYCFastest

Because this is not Europe. And we can’t get EuroSport TV over here.

      • Pete

Get a motogp.com subscription and shut your filthy baklava hole.

        • Daan

I love my motogp subscription but that won’t work for casual fans.
Plus if it’s being broadcast on television people can stumble upon it accidentally and keep watching.

    • Scott-jay

One reason it isn’t the most popular sport on screen.
Motogp.com, Dorna, offers two streaming video deals:
      US$45.50 (35 euros) for end-of-season pkg.
US$32.50 (25 euros) per month regular season.

      • gsx750f

Huh? I always pay 99€ for one year. 25€/month would be way too much for me.

  • Rick

By all appearances alien-elect Markie Mark will be an impact player in his MotoGP rookie season, multiple podiums and maybe more?

I suspect MM’s status as New Honda Golden Boy also contributed to Stoner’s dissatisfaction and early departure, he’d read the writing on the wall…en español.

    • gsx750f

Don’t think so. I’m pretty sure it would have been Dani who would have gotten the boot.
OTOH, with Honda you never know, look at Nicky being kicked out as world champ…

  • roccopeterbilt

NASCAR to me is one of the most boring sports I can imagine and most of the people who are not truly knowledgeable about it will say they watch it for the wrecks. I’m guessing many of the people making Honey Boo Boo and Real Housewives of _______, are helping to ensure Earnhardt gets the ratings relegating Rossi to the infomercial area of TV-land

  • zato1414

I had to wear my helmet and gloves just to watch this action! Half the pack are squirrels running loose in a cage… their lines change for no reason at all. No wonder the 600′s have big first lap pile-ups.

    • Coreyvwc

Actually these are the best middle weight riders in the world. They pile up a lot because they line up 4 wide on the grid as opposed to the usual 3 wide. Then again, perhaps Marquez is just one fast fucking squirrel…

  • Jack

Video is no longer available, somebody post a link?

    • Holden and Annette

Too bad. It was real, and it was spectacular.

      • Jack

        Supremely helpful! Danke!

    • Wilbur

      I wanna see this.

      Thanks!

Cue removal request by Dorna in 3-2-1 …
