Which new KTM does this engine note belong to?

KTM is teasing a new model it plans on unveiling at EICMA next week by releasing a recording of its engine note. That recording, which you can listen to on the Austrian company’s blog, is…epic. So what is it?

The most heavily rumored product is of course the KTM 390 Duke, a larger, more powerful take on the firm’s new small-capacity range. But, at least to my uneducated ear, the sound heard here is too strong, too two-cylindery for a 373cc single.

If we go back to that leaked dealer meeting slide, published first here on HFL, we can see that in addition to the mid-capacity Duke, there’s also mention of a new SuperDuke. Engine capacities on that slide have been shown to be somewhat off, but it stands to reason that such a bike would use a version of the LC8 v-twin, first seen in the 173bhp RC8 superbike and most recently in the 148bhp KTM 1190 Adventure. In either tune, or in one that’s halfway between the two, that’d be a substantial upgrade over the old 990 SuperDuke’s 123bhp.

EICMA starts Monday. You can find follow our full coverage, the most comprehensive out there, right here.

Hmmm, i kind of doubt that it’s a big Twin. It sounds not throaty enough for the RC8. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=oeNQE5ALfco#t=123s )

It may be a high revving single, but i can see how one would think it’s a twin. Then again, listen to the Aprilia SXV/RXV twins ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1C0t6jNsJ0g&list=LLP-0bsZLQVX2Q7kmHBrOTTQ&feature=player_detailpage ).

Now, if KTM is throwing a COMPLETE curve ball and is actually teasing something along the lines of what everybody wants, a mid-sized Adventure bike, then holy poop will the world go nuts. A 600+ cc Twin would be rather tits, if you ask me.

Can’t wait to see what it actually is, though.

Hard to tell past that silly echo. Sounds more like a single, but does have that SXV note to it, as Penguin points out. Here’s hoping they start expanding the brand in a way the orange bikes deserve…

Somehow sounds like a single to me. A BAD ASS single!

I’m also on the small single band wagon. I’d be super stoked if that’s the Duke 300!

  • Dan

If that picture is associated with the noise, I say 3xx Duke. RHS Engine cover looks identical to what’s used on the 200 Duke. Covers on the 1190 Adventure and 1190 Superduke spy shots look totally different.

They still have to release the Superduke 1190, but that is probably not going to sound like that.

When I get home, I’m going to audio highjack the engine noise into Ableton and take a looksee at the transients on the wave form. Let my eyes do the listening. Remember everybody in the MotoGP pits grabbing mics and oscilloscopes to figure out the Yamaha’s crossplane crank when it came out? Same thing.

Awesome, let us know how that goes.

  • Trev

Sounds like a single to me, or a very quick revving and small cc’d twin.

If Lisalla Montenegro was pictured in this piece, it would go from “epic sound” to “nervous control system shutdown “.

  • Johndo

I dont know but it was recorded in a huge metal container.

Just noticed…is that a single sided swingarm? mighty weird brake line in that burnout pic
