62 photos of 21 Helmets

The concept behind 21 Helmets is simple. A wide range of artists, fashion designers, custom builders and general creative types are tasked with applying their own, unique designs onto motorcycle helmets. Because helmets are evocative of adventure and risk and speed and all that, it leads to some pretty interesting art. This year’s show was held this past Saturday at Portland’s See See Motorcycles.

Artists involved this year included Death Spray Custom, The Deth Killers of Bushwick, Roland Sands and even Shinya Kimura. They worked with Icon Variants, Biltwells and the original Bell Star Classic auto racing helmet (looks really cool, you probably don’t want to ride in it). More than 500 people attended the show, where these photos were snapped. Check back soon for pro studio shots of each helmet.

Just had a Helmetgasm, but a few of them looked terrible. Specifically the ones that had a Pabst in the background. PBR ruins another photoshoot :(

God forbid people drink free beer.

And “nonchalantly” show off that free beer in as many “Hipster for Leather” photos as possible. ;)

Bad beer is still bad beer, regardless of how much it cost :). I kid of course, great gallery!

        The beer wasn’t free…

While I would never ever wear an open face, I love every single one of these as art for arts sake. Very talented people at work here.

18= Death Spray Custom? Love his work.

  • Ballzach

What full face helmets are those?

    • 80-watt Hamster

      Looks like the original Star.

As described in the article, they’re the Bell Star Classic auto racing helmets. Not good for bikes, but they look cool.

      • HenryC

wow those are way more expensive than I would have thought.

  • Ballzach

What full face Bell helmets are those?

That scene looks so typical of PNW Portland. Much stylee fanfare to do about nothing. De-evolution at work is less than inspiring IMHO.

    Looks like another great exhibition.
    The winners of this year’s Seedy(tm) are…
Woody: Best Use of Alternative Materials
Eyeball: Best Graphic I Wouldn’t Actually Wear
Chainbrain: Best Graphic I Would Actually Wear
    Woody: Best Helmet

    • 80-watt Hamster

With you on all of those, though I’d almost rank Chainbrain above Eyeball overall; it was the only design (aside from Woody) that made me immediately think, “Holy crap, that’s fantastic.”

Honorable mention: RSD (shocking, I know.)

      • Jesse

I’m in the Chainbrain > Eyeball camp. But agreed that there is a lot of talent being displayed all over that show. I’m now eyeing my Airframe Construct as a canvas…

Death Spray Custom? Deth Killers of Bushwick?? what with all the darkness fellas?
does that make y’all hip or something? god its been done, get over it!

    • Jesse

It’s all been done, ad nauseum. Having fun with it is the fun part.

death is not cool and its just not fun.

        • Jesse

I’m certainly not looking to go die, but it is inevitable. I subscribe to parody as a method of coping with that fact.

  • Beinggodisgreat

Wow nice idea poor application…hipster douche’fest’ola…

The PBR thing, to me, is indicative of a preference for form over actual substance, especially when in Portland.

  • Lawrences

Not one single Pabst Blue Ribbon helmet in the bunch…

Re: hipsters, you can’t swing a stick in Portland without hitting one, so I can appreciate that these guys at least like motorcycles. The Pacific NW is God’s urinal for 8 months out of the year, but I still see a lot of these guys riding all year round, and that gets respect from me no matter what you’re wearing.

  • who is thor drake

As curator of the show i would like to inform the negative nancy’s that this show is about wearing helmets even if the helmet is not as cool or safe as the one “You” have. As per every year people get hung up on the fact we look like hipsters, well all i can say is who cares? all types of people like motorcycles… thats good, not bad.
