Learning to race on ice

01 topshot ice speedway

Ice Speedway is the same as regular Speedway, just with huge grip instead of slides — there’s around 90 spikes in the front tire and anywhere from 200 to 500 spikes on the rear. Franz Zorn is an ice speedway rider who won the Individual Ice Racing European Championship in 2008 and is currently teaching Mikkel B. Jensen how to become a pro at Ice Speedway.

Ice racing was the first type of motorcycle racing I ever saw in person. They turned an ice skating rink into a flat track and rode tracker bikes with smaller spikes than these so the bikes still turned like trackers. If you guys eve get a chance to see this in person, don’t hesitate. It’s one of the most exciting and tense things you’ll ever get to watch

This looks completely nuts. Do they wear any special gear beyond the usual race stuff? I’d be concerned about getting perforated by the other riders.

Also, why do Europeans love flat bill caps? Here’s looking at you, Lorenzo.

The Jersey Shore look is a thing in Germany.

Shy of wearing chain mail I’m not sure there’s much you can do protect yourself from those.

Except that would have to be some damn heavy, tight weave chainmail to stop those spikes from penetrating…

I thought they do wear extra padding? (Also to help keep them warm, ’cause ya know ice racing is kinda cold.)

Europeans? its a pretty universal thing there Dan, plus in this case its an advertising thing.

In layman’s terms, that’s crazy as fuck!

Apparently they had to move the gas tank in order to make room for the huge brass ones on the riders.

    Super nice!

In Norway we got both ice speedway and ice racing, same tracks and similar bikes, the difference is in length of the spikes.

Longer and sharper spikes makes for no sliding, Above 5G through the bends! The racers say they could go faster, if they didn’t have that left leg.

5G’s cornering… guaranteed to bend your scone, man!
