We just snagged the very first official images, specs an full details of the highly, highly anticipated 2014 KTM 1290 Super Duke R. And, we’re extremely excited to report that this is one bike that has not been watered down. That’s right: 180 mother loving horsepower.

2014 KTM 1290 Super Duke R Video:

That power comes from a 1,301cc, 75-degree V-twin developing 106 lb.-ft. of torque and drives a dry weight of 416 lbs. Bore and stroke are 108 and 71mm. This is the most powerful naked production bike in the world, if not the lightest. That power-to-weight ratio is enough to push it from zero to 124 mph in just 7.2 seconds. This thing is going to be insane.

2014 KTM 1290 Super Duke R

That capacity isn’t just used for peak figures though. 1.3 liters means huge torque at low revs. Specifically 74lb-ft at just 2,500rpm. The motor redlines at 12,000rpm. Despite such impressive numbers, it shouldn’t be a maintenance nightmare. Service intervals are 9,300 miles apart.

It’ll slow down too. Braking comes from the same Brembo M50 Calipers and 320mm discs as the Ducati 1199 Panigale S, just with one big difference: Supermoto Mode! That disables ABS at the rear, enabling you to back it into corners. No word on whether or not the bike as Bosch’s new cornering ABS system, but that company is supplying the ABS system, so fingers crossed. A slipper clutch should help keep things upright, regardless.

Also keeping things safe is ride-by-wire and traction control. Switchable riding modes run the gamut typical “Sport” and “Rain” to the never-before-seen “Supermoto.”

A (slightly) Faster Motorcycle: Ducati 1199 Panigale R

  • John

Oh, well, I predict Darwin is going to have a field day with this.

    • Cameron Evans

All the better to reduce squid numbers. Motorcycles are natural selection on steroids.

  • lukeeye

Siyack! Very nice. Cut the tail slightly, frame stayed honest, really needs a nice Akra system, but the headlight came out clean– man I would love to take this for a spin!!!!

    • lukeeye

…between the reticulated frame and the single sided swing arm, they are kinda munching off some Ducati Originality, but those angular lines and that beasty 1300 makes it all the more exciting- and since Ducati seems to be abandoning us hooligans, KTM is just filling the void!

      • Chris McAlevy

With the new hypermoto, I don’t think it’s fair to say that Duc is abandoning hooligans.

  • Scott Blackie

Looks ugly, but the original was no beauty contestant either. Bet it’s a whole bunch of fun to ride though.

    • mentalmental

u came to the wrong neighborhood bro

    • Guzzto

when you are sitting on it you don’t have to look at it, and unless it’s parked all you will see is an orange blur : )

  • Andrew McDonough

All I want to know is the price.

  • Twin Verb

I’ve been thinking about getting another bike. A long time ago I used to rock a Honda CM400. Would this bike be for me?

    • http://RideApart.com/ Wes Siler

Absolutely. Can you sign it over to me in your will please?

      • Davidabl2

Wes, You want it even if it comes to you in a couple of small boxes..
        like a Lego set ?

        • http://RideApart.com/ Wes Siler

          I own a wrench.

          • Davidabl2

A parts book (aka ‘parts fiche’) would be helpful as well to put it back together :-)

            • http://RideApart.com/ Wes Siler

If i can borrow yours I’ll let you take the bike for a spin. As we mourn Twin Verb, of course.

              • Davidabl2

..That one went over my head. Twin Verb?

                • Robert Horn

I see the time of mourning was of an appropriate length…

                • Twin Verb

I’m home safe!!! lol. I heard a story from a local KTM dealer that let a rider take a test ride on that first Duke that came out and went down about 40 yards from the shop. I think his first bike WAS a CM400…

  • Rowtag

sweet baby jesus and the monkeys

  • Daniel Silverman

supermoto mode = coolest thing ever.

  • JC Maldonado

    Mechanical porn.

  • Harve Mil

Ducati Streetfighter S has an official dry weight of 368lbs. That said, this engine is clearly going to eat the 1098 for lunch. What’s the wheelbase length? 100+ ft/lb of torque and 72 at 2.5k means this thing without wheelie control is going to be a psycho handful. We are talking 4th gear power wheelie territory here.

  • Damo Von Vinland

“Despite such impressive numbers, it shouldn’t be a maintenance nightmare. Service intervals are 9,300 miles apart.”

If that is for valve adjustments, that is still pretty terrible.

    • Scott Sweeney

How many miles a year will their prospective owners be riding?

Do your own adjustments then. Its easy.

      • Damo Von Vinland

The bike is rad, don’t get me wrong, but I am a 12,000 miles year guy and I do all my maintenance that doesn’t involve ECU updating.

    • KevinB

My KTM requires that you remove a whopping 6 bolts to check the valves, one less than it requires to change the oil. Who cares?

      • Damo Von Vinland

Please don’t compare a valve adjustment check/adjustment to an oil change. Even on a DR650 thumper they aren’t trivial.

        • KevinB

Apparently we have different definitions of trivial.

  • DucMan

    The Seventh Sign.

  • Andrew

so wild. i cant wait to see it in the hands of a pro!

    • Jonathan Berndt

Hands of a pro???? i cant wait to feel it in my hands!

  • Corey Cook

It certainly won’t be winning any beauty pageants, but jesus those numbers are just plain insane! Same capacity as a Hayabusa but with v-twin torque…

    • Harve Mil

Common misconception is that the Hayabusa doesn’t have that much low end torque. It actually does. It’s a big boy. It’s just heavy and long. This KTM and the Hayabusa will seemingly have rather similar power metrics. Note the figures in the article and this graph.

      • Davidabl2

Back in the era of the US and the USSR standoff the expression “making the rubble bounce” was used to express the idea of nuclear overkill..Somebody needs to come up with an equally catchy description to describe motorcycle overkill :-) As seen in these numbers…Wow.

        • Harve Mil

How about a motorcycle “Doomsday Gap” ala Dr. Strangelove? :)

          • Davidabl2

Could be. A few decades back if Italy, Japan, and Germany
had been sending us machinery like this some would have thought the former Axis powers were trying to get even with us for defeating them in WW2. And since they sell ‘em in their home markets it’d be “mutually assured destruction.” :-)

  • http://instagram.com/real_jason_ip Jason Ip

This thing will probably wheelie like the Dickens

    • Cameron Evans

The epic wheelies are positively Dickensian.

      • Harve Mil

It was the best of wheelies. It was the worst of wheelies.

  • el_jefe

Breaking Bad is over, but this exists; balance is restored.

    • Davidabl2

Just for the hell of it KTM ought to do a product placement in that other
      crime show..Sons of Anarchy;-)

      • aergern

Yeah, maybe a show like Sleep Hollow… The “Horseman” Death can ride it. ;)

      • Richard Gozinya

That could work. Could have the doctor lady dump the blonde douche, and take off on her brand new Super Duke. Doing a nice burnout with him standing behind the bike, maybe followed by a chase scene, with blonde douche losing site of doctor lady after the first block. The rest of the show could be blonde douche riding all over methtown, shouting out her name, crying, and his mom looking after the brats. The final scene could be doctor lady wheelying as she rips past old fat guy and the rest of the gang, flipping them all off.

        • Davidabl2

I had nothing as detailed in mind ;-) Plus (and partly because)
I’ve only watched the pilot/premiere of the show..
The basic idea though is that there’d be a place in the show for either a protagonist or an opponent with a bike way,way badder than the S.O.A. Club’s Dynas or FXR’s or whatever those bikes they ride are.

  • VagrantCoyote

    Schwing!

  • KevinB

    KTM just brought it

    • aergern

      You mean owned it. :)

  • jng1226

Somebody lied to you. The Ducati Streetfighter 1098 is out of production now, and never used the 1198 engine, only the 1098 motor in a retuned state. The Ducati Streetfighter uses an smaller version of the 11-degree overlap Testastretta motor.

  • Harve Mil

No, in fact, the big Streetfighter has always used the 1098 engine.

    http://www.ducati.com/bikes/streetfighter/streetfighter_s/engine/testastretta_evoluzione/index.do

You are thinking of the Multistrada and Diavel which are based off the 1198.

Nor is the Streetfighter S for sale in North America in 2013. Note it’s absence here:

  • contender

Oh, uh, it’s the pleats… the pleats in the pants. It’s an optical illusion. I was just about to take them back… to the pants store. Oh this is embarrassing.

  • Harve Mil

    I Love it!

  • Eduardo

It really looks like a pitbull on two wheels: muscle and bones.

    Not for everyone…

  • devillock

Time to trade in the SMT…

    • roma258

I’ll take the SMT off your hands, k thx

      • devillock

Lol, ya… As bonkers as that SD is, reality is that its a track weapon and for everyday riding the SMT is the better bike(for me). Actually, SMT is best bike I’ve owned…

  • Jemook

Nice to see not much has changed from the original!

  • Kr Tong

Those austrians are a classy bunch.

  • Sjef

This sure looks nice on paper and in photo’s, here’s hoping it will hold up better then 990 Superdukes in real life

    • Jonathan Berndt

they are actually bullet proof, i have 35k on mine, stupid little things need maintenance, but the only time it has let me down was a rectifier problem, had to get the truck for that ride home!

      • Sjef

Yeah I mean the stupid little things like leaking instrument clusters, faulty electrics etc. But they effect joy of ownership pretty dramatically.

        • Jonathan Berndt

true, and ive experienced both, but to their credit KTM backed me up even outside the warranty. i still get a thrill out of it. im hoping they will have made strides on reliability with the new one.

          • Sjef

I can imagine, a nice 990 sd is high on my ”must have” list, probably won’t happen soon though

  • Stephen Mears

    Good lord.

  • plexed

    $()@#()$*& Awesome! Thank you KTM!!

  • OtisGerald

Looks great, but I hope they offer the two tone wheels as an option.

  • Davidabl2

In the unlikely event that I was able to get my hands on one I would most certainly repaint it. In Ducati Red… Or to really, really eff with peoples’ minds paint it Harley orange:-)

  • HyperRider

Should I get rid of my Hypermotard for this? GOOD LAWD THIS IS A MONSTER

    • http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_SgRlM0sDWJI/R4Zrki-3osI/AAAAAAAAAW8/WOaLxbOOLws/s400/zoolander.jpg Sean MacDonald

depends on how difficult it is to change your Disqus screen name.

    • Jonathan Berndt

      yes

  • Rob

The best thing about this having the full horsepower that the 1290 is capable of is that BMW will now have to bring the full power of the s1000rr to the naked model that they have forthcoming. We’re going to have one serious exotic naked bike war in our future..

  • Robert Horn

Unlike too many other motorcycle companies, I get the impression that KTM has a lot of people who actually like their jobs.

  • Ganesh Acharya

World Exclusive?? What the heck are you guys talking about….these images and more have been up on the official 1290 Super Duke r website for hours

    • http://RideApart.com/ Wes Siler

Sure, nearly 12 hours after we published them here.

      • Harve Mil

Whatever you did to get the scoop, Wes, just know that we appreciate it. Thanks! Now, if you really want to impress us, get the first test bike! :)

  • Generic42

I really, really want the two color wheels to be an option, those looked so good. Also, pretty sure I’d kill myself on this.

  • Lord Triumph

If this engine, ABS and TC find their way into a new RC8 next year I’ll be buying it.

  • Ayabe

That thing is outta control. Pretty sure the front wheel is just for show, on power that thing is built to be a unicycle.

  • akshay sreemon

    uff pretty hot

  • roma258

Makes my V-twin Tuono seem like a tame commuter.

  • Harve Mil

If you look at the light blue line in the graph above the Hayabusa is producing over 74 lb-ft at a little over 3200 RPM. In my book that’s “Somewhere near” given that the dyno doesn’t even start until 2800 RPM. Keep in mind this is an actual dyno run and not optimistic ideal figures from the manufacturer. A big whale like the Hayabusa is not going to feel as fast or responsive as the KTM at subsonic speeds but it’s certainly got the grunt.

  • Anand Subba

i want to know how much price is this

  • MichaelEhrgott

    Mother of god…

  • Reid

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbcKctLP_Zc
Only Kamen Rider can handle a machine like this. CHOOOOOOOOOOUDENJI KIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICK!

  • Justin McClintock

Now if it were just a little bit less hideous looking….

  • Benjamin Reynolds

Ugh, I want one. I just have to keep telling myself that it’s too much bike for me.

  • Jonathan Berndt
  • Piglet2010

    “Its for selling.”

  • Piglet2010

I would rather have a Duke 390, unless I move to a new planet where I have professional level riding skills, and the roads are free of cagers, children, animals, and traffic cops.

  • Damo Von Vinland

I grew up with budget Hondas, so I got spoiled by long service intervals. Just bought my first Ducati and went for the Hypermotard. My bike is my primary form of transportation, my other is an old Saab probably worth less than your shirt :)

  • Techno Tard

    So it’s not just me…!
