More photos and an even an action video of the 2014 Kawasaki Z1000 have leaked ahead of its 2013 EICMA debut. This material gives us a much better look at the new, H.R Giger-esque styling.

This video was originally uploaded by Mr-Bike.jp.

While the new Z1000 appears to retain the same frame as the existing bike, the motor looks like the mildly updated mill used in the 2014 Kawasaki Ninja 1000. There, the 1,043 cc inline-four makes 140 bhp and 82 lb.-ft. of torque. A ride-by-wire throttle facilitates the addition of switchable riding modes — full power or 70 percent. The Ninja 1000 is also fitted with traction control, ABS, one-piece radial calipers and a radial master cylinder.

It’s the radical new styling, not the couple of extra horses, that are going to set this new Z1000 apart though. In addition to that elaborately folded headlight cowl, there’s a muscular new tank, large radiator shrouds and a much slimmer tail.

Large radiator cowls move the 2014 Kawasaki Z1000′s visual weight forwards.

We’ll bring you full details of this bike and more from EICMA 2013 over the few days.

  • msay

That display looks really cool along with the rest of the bike but man, those mirrors seem much too goofy looking.

    • orthorim

If I imagine this with the mirrors off it could actually look OK. Have to see in person to decide; but with the mirrors, ugh, it looks like a big insect.

If I may try a design critique – OK so everyone’s taste is different and I appreciate that Kawasaki is going for bold. But this bike looks as if it’s all front and no back; and the headlight shape seems to serve no particular purpose except to “look different” – that’s not good design, that’s kitsch. They seem to have new, tiny headlights, and then they added that big weird forehead.

  • 200 Fathoms

    It’s a Transformer.

  • VagrantCoyote

That headlight is a crime. Also, how lame is the exhaust note? Big miss by Kawasaki.

  • Dubknot

I like it… kinda looks like they took a hacksaw to the headlight cowl on the current unit though. I’ll have to check it out in person.

  • bainelaker

I dig it. Fits right in with the current crop of futuristic sport nakeds. But why does it sound like a vacuum cleaner? “VWOO”

    • runnermatt

What vacuum cleaner do you have? It doesn’t sound like my Rigid shop vac or my Eureka house vac.

  • jonoabq

    yup, its ugly.

  • Robert Horn

Do designers design weird designs to impress other weird designers or do they just hate the demographics of their customers? Or both?

No, I’m not part of the stuck-in-a-rut “Motorcycling peaked (X) decades ago” or braindead “Recycled is the new New” demographic. And, yes, I own, ride, and like Kawasakis…

    • VagrantCoyote

I’ve owned and loved Kawasakis but not excited about their design direction lately.

  • Larry

Squid-bait. If you like bottle-service, you’ll love the new Z.

  • Chris Davis

cmd+o, “Z1000 design brief”. cmd+f “restraint”. Not found.

  • John

    It’s just thoroughly gross looking.

  • pdad13

This will be a huge hit in the 9-14-year-old demographic.

  • Sid Widmer

The exhaust note made me laugh. It sounds like my weed whacker. It looks like the Hotwheels design team works for Kawasaki.

    • runnermatt

It doesn’t sound like my Stihl FS90 brush cutter.

  • Gonfern

its no Streetfighter or Brutale in the looks department. but i like it. I think those headlights are really cool looking. Sadly, looking at that frame and dimensions, it looks like it wont handle any better than the last model. Why cant the japs design a proper naked supersport?

  • Don Fraser

will sell as poorly as the last one

  • DucMan

The machine overlords have begun their assimilation.

  • ThinkingInImages

I get what they’re trying to do aerodynamically, but it’s not a good look. It’s too complex. There’s too many pieces/angles/lines. It’s going to age fast and look like last years toy.

If I was 12, and had matching superhero PJ’s, it would be exciting. I’m not and it isn’t.

  • Ben Barbeau

Someone been watching The 5th Element too much before designing this bike?

  • http://www.thecushdrive.com/ Aakash

    Streetfright-er

  • Stephen Mears

I think it looks brilliant. Completely organic, very alien, and a nice 180 from the current hyper-origami look the their current sportbikes have. Would look great with deep red accents.

  • Jay

Are those LED headlights? Both high and low beams look like they snapped on and off instantly like LEDs.

  • Randy S

I actually like the looks. It’s a bit too aggressive as a bike and as a look for me, but I still like it.

  • Justin

Are Japanese designers really that out of touch with western tastes? This does not bode well

  • chad west

I like the look its aggressive and the sound doesnt matter really because most people put on a after market exaust, i would get it

  • John

I know they were going for an animal stalking its prey, but, uhhh, couldn’t they have done better than Alex? http://images.wikia.com/penguinsofmadagascar/images/3/32/Madagascar-3-alex-spot.jpg

  • kentaro

Why do I keep turning my music off before watching these videos, need to kill that habit.

  • kevin

I like it lol. I guess I have bad taste

  • Ken

    this is sick as fuck!

  • Justin McClintock

U.G.L.Y. You ain’t got no alibi, you ugly, uh hunh, uh hunh, you ugly!

  • orthorim

If it’s a divisive design that 50% love and 50% hate, it’s a winner. Even if only 30% love it, it’s good.

Personally – ugh. And yes I do like modern designs, and manga designs but ugly is ugly; there’s way too much going on with the design, there’s too much posing, and seemingly very little functionality with this design. If the only reason that it looks this way is to “look bad-ass” without any underlying functional reason then it’s merely window dressing, kitsch, classic bad design.

    • Justin

Enzo, you lost me, I’m not sure how questioning the design of current Japanese bikes would lead you to say ‘get a Harley’ – naked bikes are actually my favorite class, it just seems to me that this z1000 is much too over-designed for its own good, judging by the other positive reactions in this thread you are not alone in liking it, all I was saying is the Japanese seem at odds with current and future western i.e. European designs, I’m sure this manga/transformers/anime look will go down well in Asia

  • Reid

I do so wish they’d make this a classy bike instead of just a really powerful one.

  • Bruce Steever

Performance should be stellar, if the latest Ninja 1000 is any guide, and the styling is unique, which is what a design should be. I tire of lookalike bikes.

  • Toly

I dig it… totally rad, totally alien, awesome! Swap the exhaust and she’s ready to roll.

  • Brett Lewis

Looks OK in the photos, but bikes always look better in person. What matters most is how it feels to the rider. The fellow in the video did not appear very tall, could almost flat-foot, seat/tank looks narrow, some wind protection offered by minimal bodywork. Wonder if they’ve done anything to improve handling as a few reviewers have said it could be better. Does clean air flow at helmet height?

  • metric_G

I like it, I own the 03 Z1000. The design of the 03 doesn’t really look old in 2013, I bet this bike will look just the others in 2024 too.

  • VagrantCoyote

Never ridden it and would be happy to change my mind. Generally I love Kawasakis.

  • jconli1

the more new, naked literbikes get released, the more I love my 919.

  • Jo

    it’s not a bike ! it’s a Transformer

  • bossross

I love the design. it’s aggressive and mean looking. it looks like a speed machine should.
