There are few companies we support and have as much faith in as Aerostich. We’ve reviewed the Roadcrafter, the Darien Light Pants, and Combat Touring Boots recently, but know that any product we get from them will be of the highest caliber. Having just taken delivery of a Roadcrafter Light, it’s no surprise we can’t wait to put it through it’s paces.
The Aerostich Roadcrafter Light is constructed of HT200 Denier Nylon GORE-TEX® fabric instead of the 500 Denier Cordura® used on the regular Roadcrafter. They say this nylon/Gore-Tex mix offers about 2/3 the abrasion resistance as the regular Cordura and is best suited for urban commuting and dual sport riding. Still, we’ll have no qualms with using it even on the longest of journeys.
The Light version comes without the nylon lining found in the regular Roadcrafter, helping both with the decreased weight and decreased price. This means the TF3 armor that our own Wes Siler so eloquently described ins his review of the Aerostich Darien Pants hangs exposed, and velcroes to the inside of the shell.
Other than those differences, the Roadcrafter and Roadcrafter Light are identical. Same waterproof zippers, same snap down collar, same super functional pocket set up, and same “ten second or less” put on time. All of the accessories created for the Roadcrafter work with the Roadcrafter Light, and it’s offered in many of the same colors.
The Roadcrafter Light is just that, light. It’s quite a bit lighter than the regular Roadcrafter which, while the weight doesn’t bother us when wearing, can get pretty heavy when carrying around or trying to put it on. Aerostich says it makes riding in hot weather more tolerable, and we’re inclined to believe them. The thinner outer Cordura and lack of a liner transfer more of the outside temperature to your skin if you aren’t wearing thick layers underneath.
