Exploring Mother Russia on a Motorcycle

Russia is a big country, in fact it is the biggest country in the world terms of area. Western Russia, where its two largest cities Moscow and St. Petersburg, are located, sits in close proximity to Europe and is often referred to as European Russia. To the east, large parts of Russia are barren due to its extremely harsh climate. Where most people see an unforgiving and desolate landscape some see an opportunity for exploration and adventure. Here are three videos that give you a taste of what it’s like to explore the Motherland on a motorcycle.

Off-Road People: Ural Mountains

Watch a group of 24 riders take an off-road adventure in the Ural Mountains. There is some pretty wild terrain in this one.

Checkout Long Way Round by Ewan McGregor. It has him and his crew traveling through the Road of Bones. Very interesting.

I like the first video’s statement – “4000 KM, 1400 offroad”. At first thought thats a not so impressive, typical leisurely dualsport ride. Then you realize that in Russia, ‘road’ is a loose term for gravel/dirt path with huge potholes. And offroad is anything from an actual swamp, field, forest, or other land never previously used for vehicular travel.

Check out Jupiter’s Travels for the book that got most people started.

In midsummer Irbit, Siberia i is supposed to be completely “off the hook”
Most of the people in town work at the Ural factory, and/or are motorcycle nuts..and blow off a year’s worth of steam during the part of summer when there’s almost no night at all.

Mondo Enduro and Terra Circa both have pretty classic sections in Russia. Great films.

Yes Tierra Circa and Mondo Enduro were the real stuff. None of those myriad of crew and support vehicles. This was the roughing it truth rather than the TV film.

I am pretty impressed. While none of this seems like a huge deal at first, then I start to think how far they are from a source of spare parts and a real tool kit. Water logging the engine sucks when you can trailer it home and deal with it. What do you do when your hundreds of miles from a real garage?
