The Dakar rally has added Peru to its route next year. The 5,600-mile route will now begin in Mar Del Plata and finish in the Peruvian capital of Lima rather than returning from Chile to Buenos Aires. That change will add a day-long stage, making 14 total race days. Sadly, it doesn’t appear as if the rally will take advantage of Peru’s Andean mountains or rainforest, instead sticking to the coast and its Atacama-like desert.

As you can see, the previous route formed a figure eight, beginning and ending in Buenos Aires and looping through Chile.

The next Dakar will run from January 1-15, 2012.
