Piaggio Group North America’s annual dealer meeting took place this week. But, while the Aprilia Caponord 1200 prototype was present there and will be sold in America, these photos actually come from its European equivalent. These photos reveal additional angles and details of the new 135bhp ADV bike.

Here’s the thing with the bike you see here: it’s described by Piaggio as “a mock up” meaning final specs, components and even design haven’t necessarily been included. While yeah, it’s going to get that RSV4-alike fairing and will be based on the Aprilia Dorsoduro 1200, specs like engine performance, electronic features, weight and whatnot aren’t final. Instead, look at what you see here as a general idea.
Because the Caponord will exist in the Piaggio Group range alongside the more rugged Moto Guzzi Stelvio NTX (arriving in the States and in our hands next month), the Aprilia is free to be more road and performance biased. That means 17-inch wheels, big radial brakes and lightweight forged wheels (at least on this proto) in place of heavy-but-strong spoked 19 or 21-inch items.
The Dorso12 is already an exceptionally fun supermoto-style naked roadster, so adding a giant fairing and comfy seat should be the formula for an epic tourer/all-rounder that’s comfortable and practical, but wickedly fast too.
What you can see in these new photos is a huge emphasis on that comfort and practicality. Starting with the Dorso’s engine, frame and fully-adjustable suspension, we see taller bar risers, absolutely huge rider and passenger seats with big grab handles and luggage rails. A low-mount, RSV4-style exhaust should also leave plenty of room for luggage. Expect a nice set of hard luggage to be optional. The Dorso’s UFO-shaped tank even flows nicely into the enlarged RSV4 fairing. Basically, what we’re seeing is a “best of” Aprilia components.
