My first hillclimb

The first time I saw a hill climb on TV it was the famous Widow Maker in the USA and I instantly wanted to have a go. I was in my teens and didn't know any better. Many years later and after watching multiple times the craziest crashes, loops and failed attempts to get to the top of any hill climb, I still wanted to experience the madness. So, when I saw a hill climb machine at the Anaheim Supercross earlier in the year, I was begging the Team Peterson guys for a go. Aged 35, I should now know better.

As it turned out there was an event coming up at Glen Helen, California and the lunch time entertainment was the 'Crossover Challenge' where guys from different motorcycling sports came together and had a go. Perfect. I signed up on the spot and never thought more about it.

That is until I arrived at Glen Helen, saw the hill and the specialized crazy machines and suddenly I didn't feel so good. Several trips to the port-a-loo did little to settle my nerves and seeing one of my rivals was the God Father of Freestyle Motocross, Mike Metzger, plus other freestyle guys, little old me felt more than out of his depth.

Anyway, here is my video of the days proceedings and I'm just pleased to still be here and be able to write this. And yes, it is as crazy as it looks, but boy it was loads of fun!!

Full Disclosure: I helped Jamie's pregnant girlfriend move into their new house today while Jamie is swanning about in Europe. Hate that guy. — Ed.
