Annual Quail Motorcycle Gathering Takes Place 6 May 2017

The ninth annual Quail Motorcycle Gathering is set for Saturday, May 6, in California’s picturesque Carmel Valley. The theme this year is "The Evolution of the Motorcycle," celebrating “both pre- and post-war eras of the world’s finest sports and racing bikes.”

For 2017 the honored marque is Norton, recognizing 50 years of the Norton Commando. This year’s Legend of the Sport is Kenny Roberts, former national and world champion racer and honorary mayor of Hickman, California. In addition to hundreds of exceptional motorcycles, the event features a gourmet barbecue lunch, offerings from local wineries and breweries, live music and displays by manufacturers, aftermarket specialists and lifestyle vendors. Saturday’s festivities are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Quail Ride, a 100-mile loop through the Monterey Peninsula, takes place on Friday, May 5, followed by dinner at the Quail Lodge. The Cycle World tour, a 50-mile ride on Saturday morning, includes a breakfast stop and ends at the gathering before lunch. The magazine has added a Sunday morning demo program featuring new models from Honda, Bell Helmets, and Transition Shields.

A number of organized industry rides (and semi-organized public group rides) will converge in Carmel Valley and Monterey all day Friday and Saturday morning. Unfortunately for those riding from Southern California, SR 1 (aka, the Pacific Coast Highway) through Big Sur remains closed from the heavy winter storms that caused landslides and a bridge collapse.

Producers of the film Why We Ride will stage a group ride leaving Moorpark near Los Angeles on May 4, with proceeds to benefit the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation

“Three years ago we thought we would attract only ‘motorcycle people’ on the ride ,” said Bryan Carroll. “Quickly we realized that - like the movie - our audience was really people who ride motorcycles, which is a very different approach and made a huge difference. That approach expanded our sponsor base, and is responsible for a bigger ride this year – and being able to contribute more to our charity. I’m proud of our team for seeing our potential for good, and pushing harder every year.”

In addition to aiding children with serious medical issues, the three-day ride combines industry people and Hollywood creative service providers and allows manufacturers to demo products along the way.

“One of the reasons we have multiple OEMs sponsoring us is because this is about why we ride not what we ride,” said Carroll. “I wanted to bring my two passions to this ride, which is making movies and anything with an engine in it, and this year’s sponsors have captured that.”
